The Puerto Rican champion leaned toward the Arkansas Derby winner, setting off a chain of movements among the top contenders

LOUISVILLE, KY (Special to Turf Diario)— In the run-up to the Kentucky Derby (G1), where every decision carries as much weight as a result, Irad Ortiz Jr. made one of the most significant: he chose Renegade, recent winner of the Arkansas Derby (G1), passing over other serious contenders such as Further Ado (Gun Runner) and Commandment (Into Mischief), the winners of the Blue Grass Stakes (G1) and the Florida Derby (G1), respectively.
The choice, confirmed after days of speculation, not only defines a high-caliber pairing but also reshuffles much of the mount map heading to Churchill Downs.
"It’s always great to have Irad on any of my horses," said Mike Repole, co-owner of Renegade. "He is one of the best riders today. He knows him very well, especially after having won two consecutive stakes with him this year."
The Todd Pletcher trainee arrives on the rise, with victories in the Sam F. Davis Stakes (L) and the Arkansas Derby, consolidating himself as one of the strong names of the generation.
On the other hand, the decision forced Brad Cox and his team to move quickly. For Further Ado, winner of the Blue Grass Stakes (G1), they secured the services of the experienced John Velazquez, a choice that comes as no surprise. "Spendthrift was thrilled to secure Johnny for Further Ado," Cox explained. "It’s easy to understand given everything they have achieved together over the years."
But the movements did not end there. For Commandment, winner of the Florida Derby (G1), the chosen one was Luis Saez, while Flavien Prat, who had ridden him at Gulfstream Park, decided to stay loyal to Emerging Market (Candy Ride), winner of the Louisiana Derby (G2).
"The same goes for Wathnan Racing and Luis Saez for Commandment," Cox added, reinforcing the logic behind each decision.
However, the dominoes have not yet finished falling. Cox is still looking for a jockey for Fulleffort (Liam's Map), winner of the Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3), who was previously ridden by Ortiz and is now without a confirmed pilot.
In a Derby that promises to have several of these names among the favorites, Irad’s choice does more than just indicate a preference. It marks a trend. And as so often in the history of the world's most famous race, it may end up being one of the key decisions made before the gates open.
