Winner of the 2023 Montevideo, El Gran Peters's Dark Bay Captures the G2 General Belgrano and Now Sets Lofty Goals

Precocity can often be a double-edged sword in racing. Some horses show early promise, only to taper off as they struggle to absorb the toll of early efforts. The story of Rammel fits that narrative perfectly. A brilliant juvenile who captured the G1 Gran Premio Montevideo on May 1, 2023, the son of Fortify took over two years to return to the winner’s circle—drifting through distances and form cycles, flashing talent on occasion but largely disappointing.
Now sporting the silks of Stud El Gran Peters and trained by Daniel Rubén, the bay is starting to reignite the spark that once made him so exciting. A solid victory in the Handicap Atlas over 2500 meters in mid-May hinted at a resurgence, and this Sunday, he confirmed it with a convincing win in the G2 Clásico General Belgrano, once again over 2500 meters on the dirt at Palermo.
With Wilson Moreyra aboard for the first time, Rammel settled in fourth early as Mister Coquette (Bodemeister) set the pace, closely tracked by Look Portal (Portal del Alto) and Special Dubai (E Dubai). Biding his time, Moreyra found a seam on the rail turning for home, and Rammel shot through decisively, drawing clear to score by 2 1/2 lengths over the fast-closing Equal Mostaza (Equal Stripes). Look Portal held third another 1 1/2 lengths back, with Demostrame(Endorsement) rounding out the superfecta. The final time was 2:37.60, following steady fractions of 26.91, 52.81, 1:17.55, 1:41.80, and 2:06.32.
Bred by Haras Vacación, Rammel is out of Roman Libertas (Roman Ruler), from the family of champion Liberiana(Johnny’s Prospect) and G1 winner Love the Races (Hurricane Cat). He is beginning to establish himself as a true stayer on dirt, and his connections can now realistically dream of tackling bigger targets ahead—potentially culminating in a run in the G1 Gran Premio Dardo Rocha, the long-term goal.
