The extraordinary Godolphin veteran made a triumphant return following a five-month layoff to capture the Princess of Wales's Stakes (G2) at Newmarket. At 8 years old, the seasoned champion proved that his competitive spirit remains entirely intact, while fueling dreams of yet another tilt at the Breeders' Cup Turf (G1)

NEWMARKET, England (Special for Turf Diario).— At 8 years old, when most great champions are already enjoying life at stud or in retirement, Rebel's Romance continues to defy the passage of time. The extraordinary Godolphin representative returned to action this Thursday following a near five-month layoff and did so just as he has many times before: winning. It happened in the Princess of Wales's Stakes (G2), contested over 2,400 meters at Newmarket, the very venue where he began his transformation into one of the world's elite stayers.
With William Buick in the irons, the Charlie Appleby trainee took command in the straight after overtaking his stablemate Arabian Crown (Dubawi). He looked poised for a comfortable victory, although in the final furlongs, he felt the effects of the prolonged absence from the track and had to summon all his class to maintain a half-length advantage over the late surge of his rivals.
"It is always an enormous satisfaction to see him win. It's like watching one of your children compete," summarized Appleby, reflecting the deep affection the team feels for a horse that has built an extraordinary campaign around the globe.
A Grade 1/Group 1 winner in Europe, the United States, Dubai, and Hong Kong, alongside multiple international triumphs, Rebel's Romance proved once again that his desire to compete remains completely intact.
"Many wonder if he should keep racing, but he answers that himself. If one day he doesn't want to do it, he will let us know. Today he made it clear that he still enjoys this," added the trainer, who explained that he preferred to skip Royal Ascot in order to bring a fresher horse into this engagement.
Appleby declined to confirm immediate targets, though he acknowledged that another bid for the Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) remains among the possibilities. "We will go race by race. If he continues to show the enthusiasm he has right now, of course we will keep it in mind," he stated.
Buick was equally vocal in his admiration for the veteran champion. "We are privileged to be able to work with him every single day. Very few jockeys get the opportunity to ride a horse with such a trajectory. His campaign, his triumphs, and everything he has achieved across different countries are truly extraordinary," he highlighted.
He might no longer possess the superlative form of his finest seasons, as Appleby himself admits, but Rebel's Romance keeps doing what he does best: competing and winning. And each new victory only serves to expand the legacy of one of the great horses of the modern era.
