Resilience, winner of the Wood Memorial, arrives in Uruguay to stand at stud

The son of Into Mischief, out of a mare from the family of superstar Tranquility Lake, will stand his inaugural season at Haras Don Gael

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay—A stallion addition of tremendous significance for Uruguayan breeding has just been finalized. Resilience, a son of the extraordinary Into Mischief and one of the colts that generated the highest expectations in the United States during the 2024 season, will begin his stud career at Haras Don Gael, a new operation owned by professional footballer Gastón Ramírez. Carlos Moore acted as the bloodstock agent in the deal.

The arrival of Resilience represents a massive statement both genetically and competitively. It is rare for South America to secure a horse that, just a couple of seasons ago, ranked among the top names of his American generation, won a traditional prep on the Triple Crown trail, and entered the Kentucky Derby (G1) as a legitimate contender.

Bred in Kentucky by Pam Wygod and Martin Wygod, Resilience is by Into Mischief out of Meadowsweet (Smart Strike), a nick that unites two of the most powerful influences in modern American breeding. Furthermore, his female line adds top-tier depth: Meadowsweet is out of Tranquility Lake (Rahy), a G1 winner and dam of multiple stakes winners.

Trained by Hall of Famer William Mott for Tranquility Lake Farms and Ric Waldman, Resilience required a bit of time to display his full potential. After three starts at age two, he opened his winning account on January 1, 2024, at Gulfstream Park, scoring over 1 1/16 miles as a sophomore.

That victory launched him straight into the major Kentucky Derby (G1) prep races. In February, he traveled to Fair Grounds to contest the Risen Star Stakes (G2), where he finished fourth in a 12-horse field to secure his first qualifying points for the Run for the Roses.

However, it would be in New York where he produced the performance that firmly established him among the elite colts of his crop.

On April 6 at Aqueduct, Resilience put on a dominant display to capture the Wood Memorial Stakes (G2-1 1/8m). Driven by John Velazquez, he stalked in third for much of the running, launched a powerful move entering the far turn, and drew off in the stretch to win by 2 1/4 lengths in a time of 1m50s23/100.

The victory earned him 100 qualifying points and punched his ticket to the Kentucky Derby (G1), where he once again proved his spot among the generation's best was no fluke.

Facing 20 rivals at Churchill Downs, Resilience raced buoyantly in midpack for most of the running and began to make up ground approaching the final bend. Turning into the stretch, he briefly joined the battle for top honors before the grueling effort caught up with him, fading late to finish a respectable sixth behind the late closers.

His next major objective was the Belmont Stakes (G1), but that marked a turning point in his racing career. Resiliencesuffered an injury that ultimately required surgical intervention. Although he managed to recover and return to the track, he was unable to rediscover the sparkling form that had made him one of the most respected three-year-olds in North America. Now, an entirely new and enticing chapter opens for him in the region.

Resilience will arrive shortly in Uruguay to stand at Haras Don Gael, a recently launched farm established by Gastón Ramírez on land that previously belonged to the historic Haras Don Alfredo, one of the cornerstone names of Uruguayan breeding.

Don Gael's thoroughbred venture thus begins with a major splash. Resilience brings not only the credentials of a horse capable of winning the Wood Memorial in commanding fashion and making his mark in the Kentucky Derby, but above all, a deeply relevant and elite pedigree.

Into Mischief has cemented his status as one of the most influential stallions in modern American history, shattering records and extending his dominance through top-tier sons and daughters. Importing a direct son with high-level classic form and a maternal line backed by Smart Strike and Tranquility Lake offers an exceptionally attractive option for breeders in Uruguay and across the region.

At just 5 years old, following a racing career that spanned from 2023 to 2025, Resilience now has the opportunity to pass on the physical talent and class that made him look like a potential star during the first half of his three-year-old campaign.
