The colt trained by Francis-Henri Graffard prevailed by a short neck over Maranoa Charlie

DEAUVILLE, Francia (Special for Turf Diario).- In a race that over the years has become a beacon for breeders worldwide, Woodshauna captured the 2025 edition of the G1 Prix Jean Prat (1400m, straight, turf) with a performance brimming with speed, grit, and promise. Carrying the colors of American owner John Stewart (Resolute Racing), the colt is trained at Chantilly by Francis-Henri Graffardand was given a flawless ride by Christophe Soumillon.
For Haras du Magouet, a small breeder in western France operated by Marie and Patrick Lemarié, the victory was as epic as it was heartfelt. It’s not every day that a G1 winner emerges from a family farm in Loire-Atlantique—especially one whose origins are tied to the automotive industry.
By the young sire Wooded, Woodshauna became the first G1 winner of Normandy’s summer season and signaled that his future could be even brighter, with the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest on August 10 at Deauville next on his agenda.
A visibly moved Francis-Henri Graffard said: “This is a colt that just keeps improving. We decided to skip Royal Ascot to prepare him properly for this, and it proved the right call. Every time we raise the bar, he responds. Today, even though he was trapped for much of the race, he showed that burst of acceleration only special horses have. He’s fast, and as Christophe says, he still has so much more to offer.
“It’s also a huge joy for me to train for John Stewart, a fantastic owner who came in with ambition, respect for the horses, and a real desire to invest in Europe. Hopefully this victory will motivate him to stay involved even more.”
Second place went to Maranoa Charlie, a son of Wootton Bassett who confirmed his progress with a powerful late run. His trainer Christopher Head was enthusiastic: “This was his best race. He loves this track and showed he can finish. We’ve already decided he’ll go for the G2 City of York Stakes on August 23. He has an incredible mentality—he never gives up. For me, he’s one of the best horses I’ve trained, and he deserves a G1. I have no doubt he’ll get there.”
Rounding out the trifecta was The Lion In Winter (Sea The Stars), representing Aidan O’Brien and Coolmore, who ran solidly and left the Irish master satisfied:
“He ran very well; we’re happy. He’s a horse with a lot of speed. Now we have two options: the G1 Sussex Stakes or the G1 Prix Jacques Le Marois here. We’ll see how he comes out of this week.”
With names like Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) shining on its honor roll since 2019 and now emerging as a leading young sire in Europe and Australia, the Prix Jean Prat continues to prove itself as a launchpad for those dreaming of making history—both on the track and in the breeding shed. And Woodshauna, from the heart of France to the Atlantic coast, has just taken his first giant step..
