Rey de la Calle has taken a liking to crossing the wire first down the stretch at Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo. A few weeks ago, he did it in one of the 3-year-old divisions of the Especial Encuentro Provincial Invierno, and this past Sunday, he repeated the feat by capturing the Especial Ill Diabolo (1000 meters, main track)—the other race reserved exclusively for horses with racing experience from Argentina’s interior.

Completing jockey Jorge Peralta’s double on the card, the Che Micky colt stalked the blazing-fast A Suerte y Verdad(Touareg), who set an honest pace, hitting the first 400 meters in 22.92 seconds.

That early leader had enough gas for about 300 meters before faltering sharply, allowing Rey de la Calle to surge past and cruise home to a four-length victory over his rival, with another four lengths back to Josseph Texan (Nashville Texan) in third. The final time was 57.20 seconds, featuring a closing split of 44.83 seconds for the final eight furlongs.

Owned by Caballeriza Maciel and bred by Estela Raquel Pantaleón, the chestnut had previously scored an unofficial win at Hipódromo de Azul, where he is based, along with a solid placing.

Trained by Fernando Exequiel Pérez, Rey de la Calle is out of Azul Senda, a Lac Azur mare with three career wins, and hails from an established female family that includes notable black-type performers Spanish Town (Four Fingers) and Carataker (Careafolie).

Showing promising ability, Rey de la Calle looks ready to test his mettle in open company going forward.
