The two events reserved for runners with previous form in the provincial circuits highlighted Friday's card at Hipódromo Palermo, delivering winners of distinct profiles. Roberts Orpen fully delivered on his heavy favoritism in the Especial Fromm (1400m, dirt), while the Córdoba native Lejano Oeste scored an eye-catching debut victory in the Especial Che Mandraque (1000m, dirt).
For Roberts Orpen, the win represented a swift and well-deserved redemption. The Fernando Ariel Garcés trainee had crossed the wire first in a similar contest last time out, only to be disqualified and placed second behind Sátrapa(Pneumatic), though still proving he possessed more than enough class to make his mark at this level.
This time, there was no room for debate. Assuredly ridden by Brian Enrique, the odds-on favorite quickly seized the lead and dictated the tempo throughout. Traveling comfortably with plenty in hand and leaving little hope for his chasers, he turned into the stretch firmly in command and maintained his stride to defeat Empresa (Il Campione) by two lengths.
The victory confirmed all the promise Roberts Orpen had shown in his prior outing, rewarding the firm backing of punters who sent him off as the clear market leader. Bred by Haras Firmamento, the winner is another standout representative for Emotion Orpen (Orpen), a stallion beginning to deliver encouraging results with his debut crop.
Later in the card, Lejano Oeste took center stage, arriving from San Francisco, Córdoba, surrounded by an understandable touch of uncertainty given his lack of official race lines. Yet, it took only a few strides to realize this was a colt with a bright future—an impression that solidified once he began to lengthen his stride with conviction.
Representing Stud Los Beto, he settled in mid-pack during the early stages, taking his time and finding a smooth rhythm. As he reached the final 400 meters, he launched his bid and, once balanced, swept past the leaders with striking ease. From there to the wire, he did nothing but pull away, scoring by three lengths and leaving an impression loaded with promise.
There was both authority and natural fluency in the victory for the César Peralta trainee, who found a precise partner in jockey Mauricio Villarruel. The rider waited for the opportune moment to ask the question, and the colt responded with an explosive turn of foot that settled the contest well before the line.
Bred by Haras Don Florentino, Lejano Oeste is a son of Vekoma with a unique background, having arrived from the United States in utero out of his dam, Mariah Girl (Exchange Rate). Now, her offspring has launched his career in the best possible fashion.
