At 44, the veteran jockey returned determined to prove he still had plenty left to give, and this Tuesday he found the kind of victory that makes every sacrifice worthwhile: guiding Don Zahir to a commanding wire-to-wire triumph in the Clásico Hipódromo de La Plata (G3-1600m).

The son of Daddy Long Legs vindicated his favoritism with authority, shaking off Storm Sound (Hi Happy) as they straightened into the lane and pulling clear to score by 3 lengths in a performance that left the rider thoroughly impressed.

“The horse adapted wonderfully to this surface. There were some doubts about whether he could handle the mile, but today he proved he gets the distance well and put together his finest performance yet; he looked like a winner right from the break,” explained Blanco, well satisfied with the effort from the Stud El Basti representative.

The game plan was straightforward, though execution was key. Don Zahir needed to seize the initiative, travel comfortably, and use his natural speed to wear down the competition. That is precisely how it unfolded, despite the constant pressure applied by Storm Sound through much of the running.

“We knew that if they allowed him to dictate terms the way he likes, he’d be very tough to beat. Heading down the stretch, the headwind felt extremely strong, but despite being 44, I made myself small and tried to tuck in from it,” Blanco quipped with a laugh, delighted to have navigated a challenge that became quite noticeable in the closing stages.

Beyond the sporting significance of the victory, the afternoon carried deep emotional resonance for Rodrigo Blanco. It marked his first stakes trophy since returning to the saddle, and the dedication was meant for someone very special: Olivia, his youngest daughter.

“I came back primarily for my children. I had a newborn baby girl, Olivia, and the older ones kept urging me to return. Pedrito just turned 8 and had never seen me at my peak, so I came back for them. This is my first trophy win since my comeback, and it belongs to Olivia,” he expressed.

The journey was anything but easy. During his time away, Blanco saw his weight reach 67 kilos, forcing him to overhaul his habits, regain peak physical condition, and embrace once more the daily grind of a relentless profession. Now re-established among the circuit’s most trusted riders, he looks back on that process with pride.

“I also wanted to answer the question of whether I could return and perform at a high level, and truthfully, I did it in record time. I thought it would be much harder, but with strict discipline, proper nutrition, and working horses every morning, we made it happen,” he noted.

That relentless dedication allowed him to scale 55 kilos on the beam and quickly rediscover his riding rhythm. Armed with decades of experience and renewed enthusiasm, Rodrigo Blanco’s comeback continues to gather serious momentum week after week.

His closing words were offered as advice to the upcoming generation of jockeys: “For the young kids, that’s the blueprint: work hard, stay humble, and keep pushing forward.”
