It was a rather unusual Wednesday at Hipódromo de San Isidro, with a mixed card featuring both turf and dirt racing, as several races were rescheduled from the weekend to accommodate the influx of entries typical at the start of the new Southern Hemisphere racing season on July 1.

With no featured stakes on the program, Roman Garella (Remote—Garella, by Roman Ruler), bred by Haras Vacación, stood out with a sharp performance in the Premio So Easy over 1100 meters on the dirt. The 6-year-old mare, trained by Roberto A. Pellegatta for Stud Aquario’s, was returning from nearly five months on the sidelines but showed no signs of rust. Benefiting from a light impost of just 50 kilos under apprentice Wilfrido Torres Maldonado, she tracked the leaders Bingo Song (Alcindor) and Dona Beat (Storm Embrujado) before collaring the former inside the final 100 meters to score by 1 1/2 lengths in a strong final time of 1:03.54. Roman Garella has now won 5 of her 9 starts and looks poised to tackle tougher company going forward.

Another noteworthy performance came in the Premio Avec Toi (1300m, dirt), for mares aged five and up with one or two prior wins. Heavy favorite Shardara (Equal Stripes—Shayna, by Exchange Rate) proved a cut above, sweeping past Monbazillac (Hi Happy) with ease at the 150-meter mark to draw off by 3 lengths in 1:17.75. Bred by Santa Inés and trained by Enrique Martín Ferro, she was piloted by Martín Valle and now boasts three wins from ten career starts.

On the turf, the now 4-year-olds Inda Boy (Treasure Beach—Indistinta, by Equal Stripes), bred by Haras Abolengo, and John Black (Forge—Chorister Rye, by Catcher In the Rye), bred by Haras Chenaut, each earned well-deserved victories in separate divisions of the Premio Nimia Rye (1400m). Inda Boy edged Excellent Artist (Il Campione) by 1 1/2 lengths in 1:25.66, while John Black scored by 2 1/2 lengths over French Lover (Treasure Beach) in 1:26.51 over a turf course that remained somewhat yielding.
