Seeing the word “dispersal” in a sales catalog is never good news. It is another reminder that Argentine racing continues to shrink, trapped in a crisis that very few seem genuinely interested in solving, with industry leadership often more focused on survival than on the collective good.
Haras La Madrina is continuing its downsizing process as it transitions into a private breeding operation, and this Wednesday saw the sale of its entire 2024 crop in an online auction conducted by MZ Horse Sales.
After a couple of hours of bidding, the sale topper proved to be Romana Cósmica, a daughter of Cosmic Trigger out of Splenda (Mutakddim), making her a half-sister to G3 winner Grand Splendid (Grand Reward) and from the family of G1 winners Smart Choice (Grand Reward) and Patola (High Yield).
The bay filly, foaled August 22, brought a final bid of US$22,000 from Stud Las Delicias, payable in 10 monthly installments under the conditions of sale.
The second-highest price was achieved by Le Maestro, from the ever-generous Le Blues, and the second foal out of Jugada Maestra (Luhuk), from the pedigree of notable runners such as Gio Ponti (Tale of the Cat) and Salt Spring (Salt Marsh).
He was purchased for US$21,250 by Stud Bernagi.
The podium of top prices ultimately featured a tie.
On one side stood Iván, the sale’s headline offering and part of the first crop by champion Ivar (Agnes Gold), out of Nikolayevna (Catcher In the Rye), herself a granddaughter of champion Necessaire (Bright Again).
Matching him at US$19,500 was Nonina (Cosmic Trigger–Norina, by Exchange Rate), out of the G2-winning mare.
Iván was acquired by Delgado, while Nonina was signed for by Jorge Mayansky Neer, acting as agent.
The 18 yearlings offered generated gross receipts of US$227,000, with an average price of US$12,611 and a median of US$11,875.
