A terrific way to bring the curtain down on the season for the very good Rugiente, who capped Palermo’s 2025 campaign on Monday by recording the 10th victory of his career with a convincing score in the Jorge A. Ricardo Stakes (1200m, dirt), the marquee event on an otherwise modest program.

In truth, the final four months of the Il Campione gelding’s year were worthy of framing. After going several months without visiting the winner’s circle—something of a rarity for him—he roared back to top form. He captured the Handicap Mesa Alvear in September, added the Handicap Rubén E. Laitán in October, finished an excellent fourth in the G2 Clásico Ciudad de La Plata on Nov. 19, and now reaffirmed his class with a polished performance under weight-for-age conditions.

With three late scratches beforehand, including that of his main rival Príncipe Soñado (Fragotero), the Luis S. Bedoya trainee adopted a more measured approach than usual. He settled off the pace as Qué Cubano (Qué Vida Buena) and Hop On (Endorsement) disputed the early lead—only to undo themselves.

Those opening fractions of :24.20 and :46.79 set the stage for what unfolded in the stretch, where both early leaders quickly weakened. It was Bichita de Luz (Fragotero), the lone filly in the field, who took over and tried to make it count, but the favorite had other ideas.

Alerted by Martín Valle with a timely reminder leaving the turn, Rugiente launched a wide, sustained rally, sweeping past inside the final 150 meters to take command and draw clear by 2 1/2 lengths. Bichita de Luz again ran with distinction in second, while Bienhechor (Hurricane Cat) finished third, a half-length ahead of Despacito (Sabayón). The final time was a sharp 1:11.44.

Racing in the colors of Stud Rompe Paga and bred by Haras El Paraíso, Rugiente now boasts 10 wins from his career, including four at stakes level, with earnings totaling 59,385,200 pesos. The kind of horse every owner dreams of having.
