Conditioned by Juan Saldivia for Stud Garabo, the winner dictated terms from the start and drew off for a convincing front-running score

The classic winning streak for Juan Saldivia and William Pereyra shows no signs of slowing down. The duo teamed up once again on Saturday for a commanding victory with Río New (55 1/2 kg.) in the Clásico Mesa del Senado (L), contested over 1,400 meters on the San Isidro turf.
A son of the standout sire Hurricane Cat, Río New left just as strong an impression as he did in his previous outing, where he won a conditional race with similar authority. Quick from the gate, he found himself loose on the lead to dictate the tempo, aided in part by a poor start from Midnight Runner (Forge), the expected pacesetter.
Once in control, Pereyra measured the colt’s energy perfectly, kicking clear early in the stretch to put the race away. It was a mere formality from there for the Stud Garabo representative, who was never truly urged to the limit while crossing the wire four lengths ahead of Viejo Varieté (Qué Vida Buena). Stormy River (Le Blues) finished another half-length back in third, while Midnight Runner recovered to take fourth.
The favorite, El Resero Con Capa (Angiolo), performed well below expectations, failing to show his usual spark despite the favorable weight assignment. It appears his best form remains strictly over the six-furlong distance.
Bred by the Frizzo family at Haras Costa del Río, Río New is the penultimate foal of the celebrated sprinter The New Yorker (L). A multiple graded stakes winner who famously defeated males during her career, she has already produced high-level performers such as Río Felipín (Grand Reward) and Río Amigo (Todo Un Amiguito). This victory marks the fifth lifetime win for the bay, who now looks poised to successfully test the mile.
