Shiawase wins her third straight and fuels the dreams of an on-fire duo
The son of Lucullan captured the Clásico Remigio González Moreno and extended the outstanding streak of Marcelo Sueldo and Gonzalo Borda; he bested Mister Market by a length and a half and holds an alluring horizon in turn-sprint events
SAN ISIDRO, Buenos Aires (Special for Turf Diario).— Wins are chaining together, and so are ambitions for Marcelo Sueldo and Gonzalo Borda. A day after celebrating with Cahuel Win (Gershwin) in the Clásico Jockey Club de la Provincia de Buenos Aires (G3) at La Plata, trainer and jockey met once again in the winner’s circle. This time it was thanks to Shiawase, who delivered on his heavy favoritism in Wednesday's Clásico Remigio González Moreno over 1200 meters on the dirt at Hipódromo de San Isidro, adding a whole new dimension to his promising career.
Representing Stud Facundito, the colt entered with two wins from three starts and seized the opportunity to capture his third victory, stepping up into stakes company for the first time. In a division featuring few black-type races exclusively for 3-year-olds on San Isidro's schedule, the colt took a crucial step forward and provided plenty of reasons to believe he still has much more to offer.
It was not as straightforward a process as might have been envisioned beforehand. Shiawase broke slightly keen and had to settle on the fly, though he quickly improved out wide to stalk in second behind El Brigadier (Mask). The pacesetter set a demanding tempo through fractions of 23.31 and 46.26, keeping the favorite well-engaged and leaving no room for distraction.
Borda kept him attentive with the leader always within striking distance, making a decisive move upon entering the home stretch. The son of Lucullan gradually whittled down the lead and passed him at the 300-meter pole. From there he built a advantage bit by bit, though it required a touch more effort than expected to seal the deal.
He had to work for it, yes, but he also provided the necessary response when crunch time arrived. Without abruptly blowing past the pacemaker, he steadily tipped the race in his favor and sustained his momentum to secure a victory that holds value both for the result and the racing experience gained.
Late on the scene came Mister Market (Market Rally), whose rally secured second place, a length and a half behind the winner. El Brigadier, after setting all the pace, held third, three-quarters of a length behind the runner-up, while Joy Conquistador (Roman Joy) and Vivir en Paz (Fortify) rounded out the frame. The final time stopped at 1:10.10.
Bred by Haras La Leyenda de Areco, Shiawase is beginning to establish himself among the noteworthy names in turn-sprint events. His career remains young, but three wins in four starts serve as an encouraging foundation, particularly after overcoming a test that required more than simply transferring his top allowance form to the stakes level.
With that perspective, the Clásico Ciudad de La Plata (G2) on November 19 looms as a potential target. The traditional fixture on Dardo Rocha day could present him with a higher-profile opportunity and a fresh test of his abilities.
Naturally, he would face the challenge of tackling a surface he has yet to race on, in addition to lining up against older horses.
To guide him through adapting to the layout, he has two horsemen who know its ins and outs inside throughly: Sueldoand Borda, leaders of their respective standings at El Bosque and stars of a formidable season.
For now, Wednesday provided one certainty: Shiawase has secured his first stakes victory. And a duo accustomed to looking forward found yet another reason to keep dreaming big.
