Purchased for a staggering 1.3 million dollars, the blue-blooded youngster responded in the best possible fashion, scoring in record-breaking time for a two-year-old over the 1,800 meters on the turf at Hakodate Racecourse in Japan

HAKODATE, Hokkaido.— Argentine bloodlines have once again made a resounding impact on one of the most demanding and competitive racing stages in the world. This time, the spotlight belonged to Tan Gritona (Full Mast), Argentina's Champion 2-Year-Old Filly of 2022, whose very first foal, Shonan Galleon, delivered a breathtaking and highly promising debut this Sunday at Hakodate Racecourse in Japan, while simultaneously fueling the immense global enthusiasm surrounding the freshman crop of the extraordinary Flightline (Tapit).

Purchased for a staggering 210 million yen (approximately 1.3 million dollars) at the 2024 JRHA Select Sale, the blue-blooded colt entered the standard with massive expectations on his shoulders and responded in kind. Sent off as the heavy favorite in a compact field of five, the Tetsuhide Kunimoto color-bearer dictated terms with absolute authority in a 1,800-meter newcomers' event on the turf. He drew away to score by an effortless 2 1/2 lengths, stopping the clock in a track-record time for two-year-olds of 1:47.60—shaving half a second off the previous course mark.

Guided by jockey Katsuma Sameshima from the inside stall, Shonan Galleon rated comfortably in mid-pack early on while secondary market choice Danon Cube (Kitasan Black) set the fractions. However, as the field turned for home, the son of Flightline was given his cue. With minimal urging from his rider, he gathered in the leader with immense stride and kicked clear with a level of professionalism that suggests he has only scratched the surface of his true potential.

"He possesses all the qualities required to become a top-class star. I want to take things very steady and patient with him," Sameshima noted after the exhibition. The colt's next logical target could be the Sapporo Nisai Stakes (G3) on September 5.

For the Argentine thoroughbred industry, this victory carries immense pride and significance. Shonan Galleon is the first foal out of Tan Gritona, one of the most brilliant fillies of her generation. The daughter of Full Mast secured her juvenile championship honors by achieving a rare feat reserved for the elite: capturing Grade 1 fixtures—the Gran Premio Jorge de Atucha and the Gran Premio de Potrancas—on both dirt and turf surfaces, showcasing a rare versatility before being exported to Japan for her broodmare career.

Her producing career could hardly have commenced on a higher note. Beyond Sunday's spectacular winner, Tan Gritona has a yearling filly by Kizuna and recently foaled a colt by Epiphaneia on April 20, further solidifying her status as a blue-chip producer in East Asia.

Concurrently, Shonan Galleon provides yet another high-profile validation of Flightline's exceptional start at stud. Widely regarded as one of the most talented racehorses of the modern era, the undefeated son of Tapit is already transferring his supernatural ability to his progeny.

Shonan Galleon is the third individual winner from Flightline's freshman crop and his second winner from just two starters in Japan. He follows hot on the heels of the highly regarded Demian, a 1.7 million dollar Keeneland September acquisition who also scored in dominant fashion on debut.

With only a handful of runners hitting the track so far, the American superstar's inaugural crop is already living up to the monumental hype that followed him to the breeding shed. And if Shonan Galleon's introductory performance proved anything, it is that Flightline's global legacy is now beautifully intertwined with elite Argentine genetics, courtesy of a champion mare whose international story is off to a flyer.
