Argentine-bred horses once again featured among the standout performers over the weekend at Hipódromo de Maroñas
MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (Special to Turf Diario).- At Hipódromo Nacional de Maroñas, Argentine-bred runners continued their strong run of results this weekend, led by the 1-2 finish achieved by Siempre Happy (Hi Happy, 52) and Osmidas (Il Campione, 59 1/2) in the Handicap Pastor Victorica, Sunday's featured event contested over 1600 meters on the dirt.
Coming off a runner-up effort in the Handicap Especial Colombia on a muddy track, the veteran runner for Stud La Querencia JC once again relished off-track conditions, leveraging both his sharp form and light featherweight assignment to record the signature victory of his career, defeating the odds-on favorite.
Conditioned by Luis A. Cabrera, the chestnut bred by Haras La Providencia found an ideal partner in jockey Lucca N. Ortíz, who showed ice in his veins by settling him at the tail of the field, well behind his rivals.
Siempre Happy began making gradual headway wide on the track as the home stretch arrived, launching a powerful outside surge to overtake Osmidas at the 200-meter mark and pulling away to secure a 4-length victory, stopping the clock in 1m39s59/100 following swift fractions of 22s77/100, 48s55/100, and 1m11s70/100.
For Siempre Happy, this marked the fifth victory of his career from 37 starts—and by far his most prestigious. Now a 6-year-old, he is out of the memorable Siembra Azul (El Sembrador), who captured the Clásico La Mission (G2), Clásico Juan Shaw (G2), and Clásico Chacabuco (G2), all on the turf. She had previously produced high-caliber runners such as Simbora (Cityscape), winner of the Clásico Porteño (G3), and stakes-placed Sigurd (Treasure Beach).
The afternoon at Maroñas concluded with an Argentine double when, a short while later, Amiga Verdadera (Full Mast), bred by Haras Vacación, secured her maiden victory in the 1300-meter dirt contest of the Premio Qersh.
