ARCADIA, CA (Special to Turf Diario)— Some victories are explained by pedigrees, others by the clock, but the most memorable belong to the heart. The triumph of So Happy in Saturday’s Santa Anita Derby (G1) at Santa Anita Parkwas firmly the latter. On an afternoon charged with symbolism, the bay colt punched his ticket to Churchill Downs while providing a necessary balm for trainer Mark Glatt, who is grieving the passing of his wife, Dena, in February.

"She brought him here today," a visibly moved Glatt told reporters. Beyond the impeccable training, there was a sense that an extra force was propelling the colt down the stretch.

On paper, So Happy faced skepticism regarding his stamina as a son of champion sprinter Runhappy. However, his maternal line provided the necessary grit; his damsire is Blame, the horse famous for ending Zenyatta’s undefeated streak in the Classic. Under a masterclass ride by Mike Smith, So Happy tracked the favored Potente (Into Mischief)through fractions of :23.03 and :46 before launching his bid.

So Happy took command at the top of the lane and drew off to win by 2 3/4 lengths in 1:49.01. For owners Hans and Ana Maron (Saints or Sinners) and Robert Norman, the win is the culmination of 50 years of dreams. A $150,000 OBS March purchase, So Happy now heads to Kentucky with 100 points and the momentum of a horse running for something greater than just a purse.
