LA PLATA.- It doesn’t matter the track, the distance or the level—these days, one truth stands tall: beating horses trained by Juan Saldivia from his Palermo base is anything but easy. The latest confirmation came Saturday at the capital’s racetrack, as the seasoned conditioner added another black-type success in the Clásico General Manuel Belgrano (G3–1200m, muddy dirt), a key stop for sprinters during the season.

The celebration belonged to Sonreime, the 3-year-old who took a major step forward to justify his role as the favorite and fend off Lo Dejo Todo (Le Blues) by one length after the pair dueled from the break.

A son of OrpenSonreime had raised some questions last time out when caught late by longshot Mario's Rim (Remote) in the Clásico Adolfo P. y Aníbal Giovanetti over the San Isidro dirt, but that defeat proved a valuable lesson.

Tighter screws and a more aggressive approach from the outset helped flip the script this time. Ridden with confidence by Jorge Peralta, he tracked Lo Dejo Todo closely throughout, took full advantage of the rail, and never gave an inch. Once they hit the stretch, Sonreime surged ahead and held his ground gamely to the wire against a determined rival.

Four lengths back in third came Payucano (Mask), followed another length later by Le Massif (Le Ken), winner last out of the Clásico Julio Corte (L). Among the key names in the field, Arcanum (Horse Greeley) turned in a puzzling performance and finished second-to-last. Final time for the six furlongs was a sharp 1:11.46, after early splits of :24.63 and :48.11.

Bred by Haras La Manija and racing for Stud Don ValentinoSonreime now boasts four wins in nine starts. He is the third foal out of the hard-knocking Sonrisada (El Corredor), who also won stakes at Palermo and hails from a foundation family at Haras Tres Jotas, responsible for names like Souriante (Lyphmas), Madonna Benois (Angiolo), Soyer (Senor Pete), and Es Aristocrático (Angiolo), among others.
