South American group performers Dona Clota and Night of Rose confront the formidable challenge of Stellify over the European-style turf course at Kentucky Downs

FRANKLIN, Kentucky (Special for Turf Diario).— Kentucky Downs is different. Its undulating terrain, uneven turns, and unusually long home stretch make adaptability a paramount factor. And if there is one mare who has already proved to feel right at home there, it is Stellify, who this Sunday will seek to repeat her 2025 victory in the Ladies Marathon Invitational Stakes (G3T-2,100 m, $1,500,000).

The daughter of Justify emerges as the horse to beat in a field of nine fillies and mares featuring a double South American representation: Chilean-bred Dona Clota (Ivan Denisovich) and Brazilian-bred Night of Rose(Drosselmeyer), the latter facing the third and most demanding start of her North American campaign.

Stellify remains undefeated in two starts over the Kentucky Downs turf. Last year she scored two decisive victories at the venue, including this very Ladies Marathon, and has been installed as the 1-1 morning-line favorite ahead of Golden Sunshine (Medaglia d'Oro, 9-2) and Dona Clota (6-1).

Trained by Brad Cox for Elements Racing, George Messina, and Michael Lee, Stellify has not visited the winner's circle since that effort, though she has raced just twice, with both defeats coming with valid excuses.

First, she finished seventh, beaten 5 lengths, when stepping up dramatically in class for the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1T) at Del Mar. She then resurfaced following a nine-month layoff in the Beverly D. Stakes (G2T) at Colonial Downs, where she finished fourth, just 2 1/2 lengths off the winner.

On both occasions she raced from off the pace and encountered traffic, leading expectations that jockey Flavien Pratwill try to capitalize more on her early speed this time. It would not be a new tactic: Stellify’s four victories in 2025 all came after racing first or second through the early stages.

With $1,486,604 in career earnings and a record of four wins, one second, and one third from eight starts, Stellify also stands as the highest earner in the lineup.

Breaking from post 9, directly outside the favorite, will be Golden Sunshine. The Godolphin homebred returns to the grass and stretches out in distance after finishing fourth in the Trillium Stakes (G3) on the Woodbine synthetic track. The Eoin Harty trainee previously proved her marathon stamina when placing in the 2,400-meter Bewitch Stakes(G3T).

For South American racing fans, much of the spotlight will fall on Dona Clota, who has already established herself within the competitive U.S. circuit. Two starts back, the Chilean mare captured a major victory in the Robert G. Dick Memorial Stakes (G3T) at Delaware Park, and she will now attempt another step forward against an opponent who knows the unique Kentucky Downs course better than most.

It will likewise be a crucial test for Night of Rose. The Brazilian daughter of Drosselmeyer, a triple G1 winner between Gávea and Cidade Jardim, will be making her third appearance since relocating to the United States—and by far her most demanding.

Night of Rose left a positive impression when finishing second in her U.S. debut in a Keeneland allowance before running fifth in a similar contest at Churchill Downs. She now leaves her acclimation phase behind to tackle stakes company directly against some of the region's premier long-distance turf specialists.

Another name deserving attention is Way to Be Marie (Not This Time), particularly given her familiarity with both Stellify and Kentucky Downs. She finished runner-up to the favorite in this exact race last year and arrives off a seventh-place finish in the Beverly D.

Dona Clota has already demonstrated her ability to win stakes in the United States. Night of Rose brings her three South American G1 titles into the fray, seeking to prove she is ready to jump several rungs up the ladder at once.

Standing between both of them and victory is a formidable favorite in Stellify—and, above all, a unique Kentucky Downs course that demands far more than raw class to be conquered.
