Sovereignty also leads the standings heading toward the Breeders' Cup Classic

Following his authoritative victory in the Whitney Stakes (G1), the 2025 Horse of the Year moved to the top of the season's first rankings heading toward the $7,000,000 contest; Forever Young and Magnitude emerge as his primary pursuers

LEXINGTON, Kentucky—His spectacular victory last Saturday in the Whitney Stakes (G1) returned Sovereignty to center stage, and the first edition of the 2026 Longines Breeders' Cup Classic Rankings did nothing but confirm that reality: today, Godolphin's champion is the horse to beat on the road to the $7 million feature on October 31 at Keeneland.

The 2025 Horse of the Year comfortably topped the inaugural poll, compiling 392 points and securing 26 first-place votes—a direct reflection of the commanding authority with which he reclaimed his best form at Saratoga.

Trained by Bill Mott, the son of Into Mischief had kicked off his campaign with a second-place finish in the Oaklawn Handicap (G2) before running third in the Stephen Foster Stakes (G1), a performance that had raised a few eyebrows. However, his showcase in the Whitney, where he asserted dominance, placed him right back where he spent much of 2025.

Winner last year of both the Kentucky Derby (G1) and the Belmont Stakes (G1), Sovereignty had also topped the 2025 edition of these standings, though he was ultimately forced to miss the Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar due to a late fever. Now, he seeks redemption.

Naturally, the path to Keeneland will be anything but simple. Occupying second place is none other than Forever Young (Real Steel), the reigning Breeders' Cup Classic champion and winner of this year's Saudi Cup (G1). The Susumu Fujita colorbearer, conditioned by Yoshito Yahagi, amassed 360 points and collected 13 first-place votes.

The narrow gap between the top two sets the stage well in advance for what could become one of the premier showdowns of the season, should both arrive in top order in Lexington.

Sitting third is Magnitude (Not This Time), representing Winchell Thoroughbreds and boasting ample credentials of his own. Schooled by Steve Asmussen, he holds 272 points following a brilliant campaign that featured victories in the Dubai World Cup (G1) and the Stephen Foster Stakes (G1).

The sophomore class is also making its presence felt. Golden Tempo (Curlin), winner of this year's Kentucky Derbyand Belmont Stakes for Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stable, lands in fourth place with 254 votes. The colt, trained by Cherie DeVaux, stands as the highest-ranked 3-year-old.

Fifth with 197 points is Renegade (Into Mischief), runner-up in the Derby and winner of the prestigious Arkansas Derby (G1) and Jim Dandy Stakes (G2). Owned by Robert and Lawana Low alongside Repole Stable, he is under the care of Todd Pletcher.

Mott managed to place two additional runners in the top ten alongside Sovereignty. Knightsbridge (Nyquist), recent victor of the Monmouth Cup Stakes (G3), sits sixth with 178 votes, while Baeza (McKinzie), second in the Stephen Foster and fourth in the Whitney, placed eighth with 111.

Separating that duo is one of the standout performers from Saturday's Whitney: Nitrogen (Medaglia D'Oro). The champion filly trained by Mark Casse, who took on the males and finished second to Sovereignty, garnered 163 votes to secure seventh position.

Commandment (Into Mischief), winner of the Florida Derby (G1) and runner-up in both the Belmont Stakes and the Jim Dandy, sits ninth with 92 points, while Antiquarian (Preservationist), third in the Whitney for Pletcher, rounds out the Top 10 with 79.

Among the top ten, Sovereignty, Forever Young, and Magnitude have already guaranteed their berths in the Breeders' Cup Classic through the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In program, courtesy of their respective victories in the Whitney, the Saudi Cup, and the Dubai World Cup.

The next poll update will be released on August 25, followed by subsequent releases on September 8, 22, and 29, leading up to the final rankings on October 6.

There is still a long way to go before October 31, but this first snapshot of the road to the Breeders' Cup Classicpresents a captivating picture. American champion Sovereignty, defending winner Forever Young, power-packed Magnitude, and a rising generation led by Golden Tempo are beginning to frame a contest that, if all converge on Keeneland, promises to be one of the signature events of 2026.

For now, after reasserting his reign at Saratoga, Sovereignty holds court at the top.
