Sovereignty is already the fan favorite for the Breeders’ Cup Classic

The Whitney Stakes (G1) winner closed at 3-1 odds in the first Future Wager pool for the $7,000,000 contest; Forever Young was installed as the second choice, while Golden Tempo, Knightsbridge, and Magnitude completed the list of the most heavily backed contenders

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (Special for Turf Diario).— Though the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) is still two months away, bettors have already made their moves and clearly designated their horse to beat. Sovereignty, winner of the Whitney Stakes (G1) and one of Godolphin’s stars, closed as the 3-1 favorite in the first pool of the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic Future Wager.

The son of Into Mischief, trained by Bill Mott, topped the betting among the 22 individual horses offered, alongside the "all other 3-year-olds and upward" field option. A $2 wager on Sovereignty would yield $8.04 should he capture the classic on October 31 at Keeneland.

Winner of the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1) in 2025, Sovereignty confirmed his elite status against older horses this season, entering the stretch run of the calendar following his triumph in the Whitney, a win that automatically secured his spot in the Classic.

The initial Future Wager pool generated $178,906 in total handle, with Forever Young (Real Steel) emerging as the second-choice. The defending Breeders’ Cup Classic champion closed at 9-2, returning $11.04 on a $2 ticket. Susumu Fujita’s Japanese star, trained by Yoshito Yahagi, added another Saudi Cup (G1) title to his record this season and will aim to defend his 2025 crown in the championship highlight.

Among the 3-year-olds, Golden Tempo (Curlin) attracted the most support, closing at 8-1. The Cherie DeVauxtrainee captured both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes this season, and despite coming up short in the Travers Stakes (G1), he remains regarded as one of the chief contenders for Keeneland.

Looming right behind him at 9-1 was Knightsbridge (Nyquist), another major weapon for Godolphin and Bill Mott. He earned that standing following a breathtaking 6 1/4-length victory in the Pacific Classic Stakes (G1) at Del Mar, where he bested Original Sin (Curlin), with Argentine-bred Full Serrano (Full Mast) finishing third. That performance cemented his aptitude for the 2,000-meter distance and placed him firmly among the elite Classiccontenders.

Fifth choice in the wagering was Magnitude (Not This Time), winner of this season's Dubai World Cup (G1) and Stephen Foster Stakes (G1). The Winchell Thoroughbreds and Steve Asmussen representative closed at 11-1, while Baeza (McKinzie), runner-up in the Stephen Foster, finished right behind at 12-1.

One of the surprises surrounded Leading Change (Gun Runner), fresh off his victory in the Travers Stakes (G1) at Saratoga. The Brad Cox trainee landed further down the board at 18-1, behind even the "all other runners" mutuel field, which closed at 17-1.

The betting board was reduced to 23 options following the scratched interest Antiquarian (Preservationist), whose retirement from racing was announced prior to the opening of the pool.

The Future Wager offers fans an early opportunity to bet on potential Breeders’ Cup Classic contenders, enticing them with odds likely superior to those available on race day.

The second betting pool opens Friday, September 25, and runs through Sunday, September 27.

For now, the early market has rendered its verdict: Sovereignty leads the charge to Keeneland, though a lineup of proven champions, grade 1 winners, and a fierce new generation promises to make the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Classic an unforgettable showdown.
