Sovereignty Sharpens for a High-Voltage Stephen Foster Showdown

The Horse of the Year worked at Saratoga with Churchill Downs firmly in his sights, where potential meetings with Magnitude, White Abarrio, and Skippylongstocking loom in what could be one of the summer's marquee clashes

SARATOGA SPRINGS, New York (Special to Turf Diario).- While much of the American racing world's attention is currently focused on the upcoming Belmont Stakes (G1), another of the sport's biggest stars has already begun gearing up for his return.

That horse is Sovereignty, the reigning Horse of the Year, who took another step toward the Stephen Foster Stakes (G1) on Sunday, completing a significant workout ahead of the June 28 showdown at Churchill Downs.

The son of Into Mischief, trained by Bill Mott, breezed five furlongs over Saratoga's Oklahoma training track, delivering encouraging signs ahead of a race that could bring together many of the premier dirt horses in the United States.

With Jimmy Quispe aboard, Sovereignty worked in company with stablemate Bendoog, the seasoned 7-year-old son of Gun Runner. The champion began several lengths behind his partner, tracking him throughout much of the drill before gradually closing the gap through the stretch.

The clock stopped at 1:01.21 for the five furlongs after fractions of :48.21 for four furlongs and a gallop-out of 1:15.73for six furlongs. Although he appeared to be working slightly harder than his companion during portions of the move, the overall impression was highly positive.

“We just wanted him to have a useful work and give him a target in front of him,” Mott explained. “From my perspective, it accomplished exactly what we were hoping for. And the horse in front of him certainly wasn't just any horse.”

The trainer's comment was well founded.

Bendoog enters the work off a dead-heat victory in an Oaklawn Park allowance alongside Stronghold (Ghostzapper), the 2024 Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner who returned to score in last weekend's Triple Bend Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita Park.

For Sovereignty, the objective is crystal clear.

The Stephen Foster, whose purse was increased to $2 million this year, is shaping up as one of the marquee events of the American summer and could assemble an exceptional cast.

Among the horses already mentioned as likely starters are recent Dubai World Cup (G1) winner Magnitude (Not This Time), the rejuvenated White Abarrio (Race Day), the ever-consistent Skippylongstocking (Exaggerator), and several other leading members of the older-horse division.

The race also offers an automatic berth into the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) at Keeneland, adding even more significance to a contest that could begin to define the championship picture for the remainder of the season.

Winner of the 2025 Kentucky Derby (G1) and later crowned Horse of the Year, Sovereignty will now seek to reaffirm his standing among the nation's elite older horses.

Judging by the signals he continues to provide during the Saratoga mornings, everything suggests he will arrive at Churchill Downs ready for one of the most demanding assignments of his career.

And should Magnitude, White Abarrio, Skippylongstocking, and Sovereignty all make it to the starting gate, the Stephen Foster could become far more than just another summer stakes.

It could serve as an early championship showdown among America's best dirt horses.
