LA PLATA.- The racing commission at this venue has announced that, starting with the July 2 meeting, owners will be allowed to compete with their own silks, in a historic decision that will put an end to the long-standing use of traditional numbered or “transit” colors.

La Plata was the only major track in the country that still maintained this old practice, allowing individual stable colors only in stakes races. From now on, that limitation will be definitively removed.

The reasoning behind the measure is both clear and logical. According to the official statement: “Stable owners pay an annual fee for the use of their own colors, which until now has been limited to stakes and listed races, as most contests are run with transit silks, featuring fixed colors assigned to each number. It is appropriate to give owners the opportunity to use their silks in all races in which they compete, provided those colors have been duly registered at this racetrack or other racing authorities.”

Implementation will, however, require compliance with certain conditions, which is why the rule will come into effect in a few months. Among them, owners must provide at least two sets of silks and caps in good condition, respecting previously approved designs.

In cases where colors are not registered at La Plata, the corresponding certification must be submitted—a process that could potentially be handled directly by the track’s administration. Owners without registered colors will continue to race in transit silks. Another aspect to consider will be multiple entries: when a single stable runs two or more horses in a race, all must compete under the same system, either in their own colors or in transit silks, with no mixing allowed.

There is nothing more representative for an owner than seeing their colors in action. Now, at La Plata, they will be able to do so in every race on the card.
