The Argentine champion, who is coming off a layoff, faces the Lake Ouachita Stakes (L) over 1700 meters as the top candidate

HOT SPRINGS, Arkansas (Special for Turf Diario).— The road back for a champion is never simple, but class, sooner or later, usually reclaims its place. Subsanador, the notable exponent of Argentine breeding who reached peak glory during 2024 in the United States, already has his next objective on the horizon: the Lake Ouachita Stakes ($200,000 purse) this Saturday on the Oaklawn Park dirt.

After a rentrée that served to shake off the inactivity in the San Carlos Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita, where he finished fourth 8 lengths behind Cornucopian (Into Mischief), the pupil of Richard Mandella seeks to recover that brilliance that took him to the top of the American racing firmament. That afternoon over 1,400 meters marked his reappearance after an 18-month hiatus, a prolonged absence resulting from an injury diagnosed weeks after his consecration in the California Crown Stakes (G1) in September 2024.

With his sights set on the 1,700 meters in Arkansas, the defender of the Wathnan Racing silks fine-tuned his engines last Thursday at Santa Anita. The son of Fortify stopped the clocks in 1m12s80/100 for 1,200 meters, an exercise that denotes the evolution of his physical condition and the necessary tuning to face top-level demands.

"There are no other options," Richard Mandella pragmatically stated when explaining the change of scenery. The lack of immediate middle-distance commitments on the California dirt—with the Hollywood Gold Cup (G2) not on the calendar until late May—forced the legendary trainer to seek new directions for the horse. The choice of the Lake Ouachitaresponds fundamentally to a matter of timing and the need to return the chestnut to a distance that suits his abilities much better than the brief sprint of his return.

The morning-line favorite, Subsanador will face some risky and experienced rivals, such as Willy D's (Lookin At Lucky) and Coal Battle (Coal Front), without forgetting the presence of First Division (Omaha Beach).

Winner of 9 races in 18 starts and with a bank account that already exceeds one million dollars in earnings, Subsanadoris no stranger to these battles. A G1 winner at Palermo before his exportation, he proved with his victory in the California Crown that he possesses the engine necessary to compete with the best specialists in the world.

At 7 years old, the horse born at Haras El Mallín prepares to show that his recent fourth place was nothing more than the necessary loosening of muscles after a long slumber. On the Oaklawn Park dirt, and over a distance he masters perfectly, the champion Subsanador will seek to ratify that hierarchy has no expiration date and that his name remains synonymous with danger every time the starting gates open.
