LEXINGTON, Kentucky (Special for Turf Diario).— The brilliant winner of the Spinaway Stakes (G1) will tackle two turns and 1,700 meters for the first time when she clashes with promising Forever Carina in the Alcibiades Stakes (G1), the feature of an opening day that will also showcase the Phoenix Stakes (G2), featuring Hymn and Nakatomi, and the Jessamine Stakes (G2)

Summer Starlet (City of Light) made everything look simple thus far, but Keeneland will present her with entirely new questions this Friday. Unbeaten and a brilliant winner of the Spinaway Stakes (G1), the Steve Asmussen trainee will transition from sprint races around a single turn to the 1,700 meters of the Darley Alcibiades Stakes (G1-$650,000), the premier event on opening day of the fall meeting.

The challenge will be significant and includes a rival of immense potential in Forever Carina (Gun Runner), a full sister to Kentucky Oaks (G1) victress Always a Runner.

The Alcibiades forms part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series, offering an automatic, win-and-you're-in spot for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) on October 30, also held at Keeneland.

Summer Starlet already has that ticket secured courtesy of her Spinaway performance, meaning the objective will be slightly different: gaining valuable experience over the surface and, above all, testing her response to the added distance and the two turns she will encounter once again four weeks later.

That was precisely why Asmussen opted for Keeneland over Saturday's Frizette Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park, run over a one-turn mile.

The weather could introduce another variable, as rain is forecasted for Friday, which could result in an off track.

From display to display Summer Starlet needed just two starts to establish herself among the most captivating fillies of her generation.

She debuted on August 8 at Saratoga, winning by 6 1/2 lengths. Less than a month later, she returned there for the Spinaway, and the jump directly to top-level company changed little: she dominated once more, this time by 4 3/4 lengths.

Purchased for $335,000 at the 2025 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, she races for BC Stables, Wattswood Stables, Bob Albritton, Jay Graham, and David Baggett.

Her pedigree provides ample reason to believe the extra distance should pose no issue. She is by City of Light, a winner at up to 1,800 meters and best remembered for his score in the Pegasus World Cup (G1), while her dam, Act Now, though a sprinter herself, is a daughter of Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Street Sense.

She will also have a new rider in the irons: Flavien Prat, winner of the last two Eclipse Awards, will join forces with Asmussen in search of his first Alcibiades trophy.

Forever Carina, pedigree and future While Summer Starlet already boasts a G1 title on her record, Forever Carinabrings one of the most attractive pedigrees among 2-year-old fillies.

Bred and owned by Three Chimneys Farm, the chestnut is by Gun Runner and a full sister to Always a Runner, winner of this season's Kentucky Oaks for Chad Brown, Doug Scharbauer, and Three Chimneys.

Forever Carina made a winning debut at Saratoga with a powerful closing rally, and now steps directly out of maiden ranks into G1 territory.

They will not be the only ones with realistic claims. Emphatic (Nyquist), Ever Forward (Omaha Beach), Oh She Said Yes (Authentic), and High Speed Reed (Upstart) all bring experience over a mile. Emphatic arrives off a win in the Sorority Stakes (L) at Monmouth Park, while the other three secured their maiden victories in Kentucky.

A total of eight fillies will line up for the Alcibiades.

Hymn and Nakatomi, head to head Opening day at Keeneland will feature two additional graded stakes, with one bringing together top-tier sprinters.

The 174th running of the Phoenix Stakes (G2) drew a field of 11, with Hymn (McKinzie) entering in the form of his life.

Owned by Fleur de Lis Stables, William S. Sparks, and Bret Jones, he comes off the biggest win of his career in the Forego Stakes (G1) at Saratoga.

Facing him will be a familiar local favorite. Nakatomi (Firing Line), carrying the colors of Qatar Racing and Fitriani Hay, will aim to defend the title he captured in this very race in 2025, after finishing second in both 2023 and 2024.

His presence adds further interest: he will be one of Irad Ortiz Jr.'s mounts upon his return to action following an injury layoff that kept him sidelined since early August.

The third feature of the day will be the Jessamine Stakes (G2), whose 36th running gathered a field of 12 fillies.

Leading the charge will be Glycogen (Jack Christopher), representing Main Line Racing Stable and Avalon Racing Stable, who arrives following her victory in the P.G. Johnson Stakes (L) at Saratoga.

Keeneland opens its fall meeting with three graded stakes and compelling storylines right from day one. However, the spotlight remains firmly on Summer Starlet: after two devastating victories, the unbeaten filly must now prove that her speed can translate into stamina. If she passes the test, she will return to the same stage just weeks later with the Breeders’ Cup awaiting.
