The multiple Grade 1 winner will return to action following a nearly 11-month layoff to defend her crown at Los Alamitos, where she will face a formidable challenger in the rising star Grand Slam Smile

CYPRESS, California (Special to Turf Diario).— Following a nearly 11-month competitive layoff, Sweet Aztecareturns to action this Saturday with a very special objective in sight: to become the first mare to conquer the Great Lady M Stakes (G2) in three consecutive seasons. The 1,300-meter sprint features a $200,000 purse at Los Alamitos.
The defending titleholder faces a formidable, in-form challenger in Grand Slam Smile (Smiling Tiger), who arrives on the back of three stakes triumphs this season, promising one of the most attractive clashes on the West Coast sprinting calendar.
The matchup also presents a fascinating pedigree curiosity: both contenders are out of daughters of Grand Slam (Gone West), a stallion conditioned during his racing career by the legendary D. Wayne Lukas—who also trained Great Lady M, the race's namesake and dam of the unforgettable 1986 Horse of the Year, Lady's Secret (Secretariat). Grand Slam also stood in Argentina, where he served at Estación de Montas La Mission.
Bred and owned by Pam Ziebarth, Sweet Azteca boasts a stellar record of seven victories from just nine lifetime starts. In addition to her back-to-back successes in the Great Lady M, the Richard Baltas trainee counts the 2024 G1 Beholder Mile Stakes and two consecutive editions of the G3 Rancho Bernardo Handicap among her credits, proving nearly invincible over this 1,300-meter trip.
The mare also possesses deep ties to one of California's most prestigious families. Her third dam is a full sister to the unforgettable Tiznow (Cee's Tizzy), the dual G1 Breeders' Cup Classic hero and a titan of American racing.
The primary threat will loom from Grand Slam Smile, bred by Larry and Marianne Williams and currently conditioned by Sean McCarthy, who took over training duties following the retirement of Steve Specht.
Voted California's Champion 2-Year-Old Filly in 2023 and Champion 3-Year-Old Filly in 2024, the daughter of Royal Grand Slam is in sensational form, having secured victories this season in the Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint Stakes (L), the Irish O'Brien Stakes (L), and the Fran's Valentine Stakes (L). A top-three finish on Saturday will also propel her past the $1 million mark in career earnings.
The field is further strengthened by Magnificat, a daughter of Omaha Beach trained by Richard Mandella who enters off a victory in the Desert Stormer Stakes (L), alongside Bob Baffert's trainee Nooni (Win Win Win), winner of the G3 Sorrento Stakes at two, who makes her reappearance after a layoff of more than seven months.
