Following a layoff of more than ten months, the brilliant daughter of Sharp Azteca made a triumphant return to action with a devastating victory at Los Alamitos. By securing her third consecutive victory in the California fixture, she carved her name into the history books and firmly established the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint as her ultimate year-end objective

CYPRESS, California (Special for Turf Diario).— Following a layoff of more than ten months away from the races, Sweet Azteca made it crystal clear that her immense talent remains completely intact. The brilliant homebred mare, owned and bred by Pam Ziebarth, made a triumphant return this Saturday at Los Alamitos with a highly convincing victory in the Great Lady M Stakes (G2), etching her name into racing history as the first horse to ever capture three consecutive renewals of the fixture.
Saddled by trainer Richard Baltas, who candidly admitted prior to the race that the daughter of Sharp Azteca had not yet reached her peak physical fitness, the gray mare went right back to doing what she does best: breaking sharp, seizing control, and systematically wearing down her opposition from the vanguard.
Longshot A. Z. Wildcat (Munnings) attempted to match strides with the favorite during the opening frames, briefly forcing her way to the lead through an initial quarter-mile clocked in a blistering 21.84 seconds. However, that early exertion quickly took its toll. Sweet Azteca effortlessly assumed command before hitting the turn, hitting the half-mile mark in a remarkable 43.81 seconds to effectively put the race out of reach.
As the field straightened into the lengthy Los Alamitos homestretch, jockey Armando Ayuso, engineering a perfect trip in his first time riding the mare, barely had to ask for an extra gear. Once he caught a glimpse of the big screen and realized victory was firmly secured, he was even able to ease up on his mount in the final strides. The official margin at the wire was 1 1/4 lengths over Magnificat (Omaha Beach), while Nooni (Win Win Win), making her own highly anticipated return following a year-and-a-half absence, completed the trifecta.
"I only breezed her twice leading up to this race, and I realized immediately that she is an incredibly special mare. She does everything on her own and never makes a mistake out there," Ayuso remarked post-race.
Baltas, who remains undefeated across three starts since taking over the training duties for the brilliant mare, heaped praise on his pupil's natural ability. "I knew she was going into the race just a little bit short of fitness, but she is simply an extraordinary racehorse. She possesses a truly fantastic competitive attitude," the conditioner noted.
With this latest high-profile triumph, Sweet Azteca elevates her stellar career record to eight victories from just ten lifetime presentations, remaining perfect in three career appearances over the Los Alamitos strip. Her impressive resume also features a top-flight score in the 2024 Beholder Mile (G1) alongside two consecutive editions of the Rancho Bernardo Handicap (G3).
That exact Del Mar fixture, scheduled for August 16, now looms as her immediate next assignment on the calendar, serving as the logical stepping stone toward her ultimate year-end objective: the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1). It is a championship race she was unfortunately forced to bypass last season due to a minor hoof issue.
Behind the reigning champion lies a deep family history of rich California tradition. Ziebarth and her late mother, Cecilia Straub Rubens, spent decades carefully developing this particular maternal line. In fact, Sweet Azteca's third dam, Tizsweet (Cee's Tizzy), is a full sister to the legendary Hall of Famer Tiznow, the only two-time winner of the Breeders' Cup Classic. Indicators suggest that this historic family line still has plenty left to offer the sport: an un-named two-year-old full sister to Sweet Azteca is already under the watchful eye of Baltas at the barn, with a potential racetrack debut penciled in for the upcoming autumn meet.
