LA PUNTA.- The weekend at La Punta delivered plenty to talk about, highlighted by stakes wins from Tapit Bomb (Hit It a Bomb) and Copy Sound (Long Island Sound), but also marked by another setback for Colifato Novo (Lenovo), the country’s 2024 Two-Year-Old Champion, who has now gone a full year without crossing the wire first.

After debuting here with a modest sixth-place finish in the Gran Premio Jorge Laffue (L), dropping back to a mile proved the right move for Tapit Bomb, who responded with a celebrated victory in the Clásico Aniversario Hipódromo La Punta (L), carrying a lucrative purse of 8 million pesos for the winner.

Representing Stud Haras La Posta Vieja, jockey Eduardo Ruarte sent the colt, bred by Haras Firmamento, straight to the lead as soon as the gates opened, quickly building a sizable advantage and dictating the pace at will.

Down the stretch, it was all smooth sailing for the bay, who confidently held his position to finish eight lengths clear of El Mau (Holy Boss), with Río Franco (Interdetto) completing the trifecta 4 ½ lengths further back. The final time was 1:34.70, just shy of the 1:34.9 record set by Mr. Domingo (Halo Sunshine) on April 12, 2009.

Trained by Victoria M. Ledesma and out of Tapit Song (Tapit), this marked the fourth and most important victory for Tapit Bomb, who has otherwise flown under the radar in top-level races.

Meanwhile, the Clásico Estrellas Cuyanas produced a standout win for Copy Sound, while Colifato Novo finished third. Carrying 63 kilos, the champion couldn’t even secure the lead, overshadowed by the winner who surged from gate to wire.

Copy Sound had shown little in three prior official starts but now came forward impressively to prevail by 1 ¾ lengths over Sirgo (Orpen), with the champion just three-quarters of a length behind in third. The clock stopped at 1:10.30.

Colifato Novo has not won since his victory in the Gran Premio 2000 Guineas (G1) on the turf at Hipódromo de San Isidro a year ago, extending his losing streak to eight races across various tracks and distances.

Still, the imposing bay from Stud El Ranquel looks as dangerous as ever going forward…
