Tappan Street has been retired from racing and will enter stud duty at WinStar Farm beginning in 2027

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (Special for Turf Diario).— Tappan Street, one of the top colts of the 2025 American sophomore crop, has been retired from racing and will stand at stud beginning next season at WinStar Farm, the nursery that also formed part of his ownership syndicate throughout his track career.

A son of the legendary Into Mischief, Tappan Street made his signature mark when capturing the Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park—a victory that grew even more impressive with time, as that afternoon he defeated Sovereignty(Into Mischief) by 1 1/4 lengths. Sovereignty would go on to win the Kentucky Derby (G1) and secure Horse of the Year honors. In fact, Tappan Street was the only horse to defeat Sovereignty during his entire 3-year-old campaign.

“He is an elite son of Into Mischief and hails from an outstanding family. He established himself among the leaders of his generation with a dominant victory in the Florida Derby, a marquee race for the Stud Book and a true test of talent,” noted Liam O'Rourke, Director of Stallion Operations at WinStar.

That performance came in just his third career start. Tappan Street completed the 1,800 meters in 1m49s27/100, the fastest time posted by a 3-year-old at that distance at Gulfstream during 2025.

His potential was on display long before that. Purchased for $1,000,000 as a yearling at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale, he debuted at 2 winning over 1,400 meters at Gulfstream in 1m23s46/100, earning an 84 Beyer Speed Figure for the effort.

Trainer Brad Cox did not hesitate to step him up immediately, placing him in the Holy Bull Stakes (G3) for his next outing, where Tappan Street finished second to Burnham Square (Liam's Map), drawing nearly 10 lengths clear of the third-place finisher. His signature triumph in the Florida Derby followed shortly after.

“From day one, he showed us he was an exceptional athlete. His winning time debuting over 7 furlongs confirmed our expectations, and his victory over Sovereignty in the Florida Derby was a unique achievement—something no other horse in that generation managed to do,” recalled Cox.

After a nine-month layoff during the second half of 2025, Tappan Street returned to the races with a comfortable victory in a 1,600-meter allowance race at Gulfstream, which ultimately proved to be one of his final starts prior to the announcement of his retirement.

Bred in Kentucky by Blue Heaven Farm, he is out of the G2-placed Virginia Key (Distorted Humor), a half-sister to Del Mar Debutante (G1) winner Grace Adler (Curlin) and Pimlico Special (G3) winner and G1-placed Pyrenees(Into Mischief). The family also produced Whitney Stakes (G1) victor Bullsbay (Tiznow).

With a pedigree, conformation, and race record of this caliber, WinStar is betting heavily on Tappan Street as he joins their 2027 stallion roster.

His introductory stud fee will be announced at a later date, but his primary calling card is already written: he was the horse that defeated Sovereignty when no one else could.
