Hipódromo de San Isidro has announced the purses for the series of G1 races that will be part of the Gran Premio 25 de Mayo meeting and, surprisingly, has equalized the rewards for its flagship national race and the Gran Premio Copa Diamante (G1), its newest top-level event.

Each of those races will distribute ARS 100,000,000, with ARS 50,000,000 going to the winner and a total entry cost of ARS 2,000,000. In addition, second place will earn ARS 17,500,000; third, ARS 10,000,000; fourth, ARS 6,500,000; fifth, ARS 5,500,000; sixth, ARS 4,500,000; seventh, ARS 3,500,000; and eighth, ARS 2,500,000.

The decision is, to say the least, controversial. First, because of the historical weight of each race and also because the 25 de Mayo is run over 2400 meters, while the Copa Diamante is contested over a mile for fillies and mares, both on turf. Never before has a middle-distance race offered the same purse as a long-distance event.

It also cannot be overlooked that the 25 de Mayo, the second most important race of the season for older horses after the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini (G1), will offer half the prize money of next week’s Gran Premio República Argentina (G1) at Palermo. As for the Copa Diamante, it will exceed by ARS 5,000,000 the purse offered in the Gran Premio Criadores (G1), also at the center track.

The meeting will also feature the Gran Premio Gran Criterium (G1-1600m, turf) and the Gran Premio de Potrancas (G1-1600m, turf), each with total purses of ARS 70,000,000, distributed as follows: ARS 35,000,000 to the winner; ARS 12,250,000 to second; ARS 7,000,000 to third; ARS 4,550,000 to fourth; ARS 3,850,000 to fifth; ARS 3,150,000 to sixth; ARS 2,450,000 to seventh; and ARS 1,750,000 to eighth.

Again drawing comparisons, Palermo has set purses of ARS 53,250,000 for both the Gran Premio Jorge de Atucha (G1) and the Gran Premio Montevideo (G1), with ARS 25,000,000 to the winner.

The program will also include the Clásico Fondistas Provinciales (2000m, turf), for 3-year-olds and up who have competed in staying races across the country, with a total purse of ARS 21,400,000 and ARS 10,700,000 to the winner.

Entries for all these races will be taken in advance through noon on Monday, May 11, with final declarations scheduled for Monday, May 18.
