The Hipódromo de San Isidro made the announcement during the Gran Premio Jockey Club post-position draw: a total purse of 500,000,000 pesos, with 250,000,000 pesos (US$185,000) earmarked for the winner
Amid the usual excitement and suspense, the post-position draw for the upcoming Gran Premio Jockey Club (G1), held Tuesday just after noon at Hipódromo de San Isidro, delivered a stunning announcement that took most by surprise.
The Jockey Club Argentino declared a total purse of 500,000,000 pesos for the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini (G1-2400 m, turf), South America’s most prestigious race, scheduled for December, equivalent to roughly US$370,000 at current exchange rates.
The sum now stands as the highest in South America among countries listed in Blue Book Volume 1 of the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities, surpassing the Gran Premio Latinoamericano (G1), which on October 18 at Hipódromo da Gávea in Brazil will offer US$300,000. Of the total, 250,000,000 pesos (approximately US$185,000)will go to the winner.
For the first time in many years, the announcement was made far enough in advance to allow potential entrants from other countries in the region to consider traveling to Argentina for the Pellegrini—a likelihood now amplified by the record purse. Unofficially, representatives from Peru, Uruguay, and Brazil are already expressing interest, and that number is expected to grow.
Looking ahead to next Saturday, the Jockey Club will go to the post at 6:20 p.m., with The Great Racing (The Great Day), the top choice, set to break from gate 9. The G1 portion of the card opens at 3:15 p.m. with the Gran Premio Suipacha, followed by the Gran Premio San Isidro at 4:20 p.m. Additionally, the high-profile Clásico Doria is scheduled for 2:45 p.m.
The card will feature 17 races in total, with action beginning around noon and concluding near 8:30 p.m. Significant extra pools and purse increases are anticipated, promising a day to simply sit back and enjoy.
