This Time on the Front End, Roman Joy’s Son Dug in to Capture the Listed Candy Ride

After a debut as flawless as it was promising, The Outsider had left his connections frustrated, finishing well back in the Clásico Old Man (G3) and then again in the Clásico Vilmar Sanguinetti. However, the gray colt from Haras El Angel de Venecia regained confidence and form, taking the Listed Candy Ride (L, 1,400 m, heavy turf) and once again raising expectations for a bright future.
What prompted such a radical turnaround? The answer may lie in a tactical shift with the son of Roman Joy (Fortify), one of several first-crop sires making a mark this season.
This time, jockey Eduardo Ortega Pavón let him run freely, sending The Outsider to the front early. While he enjoyed a clear lead, the race was far from easy. Several challengers tested him throughout the trip, but the colt showed plenty of resolve to fend them off.
In the stretch, he had to hold off a late surge from Convertido (Conversor), the true longshot of the race, who finished a half-length behind. Constitucional (Gouverneur Morris) was third, a head ahead of Hit It a Bou (Hit It a Bomb), while the favorite Sea (Daddy Long Legs) ended up fifth, three-quarters of a length behind. The final time was a solid 1:23.98 over a challenging course.
Trained by Carlos D. Etchechoury, presented by Daniel Bordón, and bred by Haras El Angel de Venecia, The Outsider is the fourth foal of Tilde (Exchange Rate), dam of triple winner Trivento (Cima de Triomphe) and from the family of G2 Galán de Cine (Successful Appeal).
The Outsider recaptured the promise of his ideal debut and now joins the group of three-year-olds aiming to make a name for themselves in the second half of the season, with middle distances as his likely specialty.
