The three-time grass champion in Peru, Don Feres (Singe The Turf), arrived in Buenos Aires last Tuesday and was immediately installed in Campo 2 at San Isidro Racetrack, where he will undergo the mandatory quarantine period. The gray horse is stabled at Juan Carlos Bianchi's barn.
A multiple group winner at Monterrico, second in the 2023 Longines Gran Premio Latinoamericano (G1), and third in the previous season’s Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini (G1)—both at the Jockey Club Argentino—the horse, representing Stud Jet Set, aims to participate in the Gran Premio 25 de Mayo (G1) in two months. However, it is not ruled out that he may run a preparatory race beforehand.
Don Feres will continue under the training of Juan Suárez Villarroel, who will regularly be in the Argentine capital overseeing the entire training plan. The trainer previously won the national race, the second most important event of the year for long-distance horses at San Isidro, in 2012 with Al Qasr (USA-Aptitude).
César Bocanegra, the gray horse's exercise rider, will join the team next week to begin morning training, and Carlos Trujillo—who also rode Al Qasr—will remain in charge for the international race.
By far, Don Feres is the best adult grass horse in his home country, where he earned 9 wins from 13 starts, all of them in stakes company, including the Presidente de la República (G2), Almirante Miguel Grau Seminario (G2), Enrique Meiggs (G2), Miguel Checa Eguiguren (G3), Pedro García Miró (G3), Gustavo Prado Heudebert (G3), Claudio Fernández Concha (G3), Empery, and Selectos Potrillos.
Additionally, he finished second in the Clásico José Rodríguez Razzeto (G3) and third in the Ciudad de Lima (G2)—both on dirt—and in the Rumbo Al Latinoamericano, losing a thrilling race.
Bred by Haras Rancho Fátima, Don Feres has finally begun his preparation for the 25 de Mayo after plans to stay in Argentina following the Pellegrini fell through, and a recent trip was canceled due to a flight cancellation. He will undoubtedly be a major contender.
