The Tampa Bay Derby (G3-1700m, dirt) saw a breakthrough performance this Saturday as The Puma transitioned from the maiden ranks to a serious Kentucky Derby contender

TAMPA, Florida (Special for Turf Diario).— The Road to the Kentucky Derby (G1) added a thrilling new chapter this Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs, where the 46th edition of the ESMARK Tampa Bay Derby (G3-1700m, dirt) crowned an unexpected hero. In a display of evolution and courage, The Puma leaped from the obscurity of the maiden ranks to the forefront of his generation, claiming the winner's share of the purse and virtually securing his spot in the starting gate at Churchill Downs.
Conditioned by the Delgado family—the same team that led Mage (Good Magic) to glory in 2023—the colt was handled with a "silk touch" by veteran jockey Javier Castellano. Breaking from an uncomfortable outside post, the son of champion Essential Quality sat expectantly while the heavy favorite Canaletto (Into Mischief), a million-dollar purchase, struggled for rhythm in traffic. At the front, the gray Redland Rebels (Uncle Chuck) set demanding fractions of 22s86/100 and 46s48/100.
The race reached its peak as they hit the homestretch, evolving into a strategic duel. The Puma launched his bid on the outside and, after taking command in the final 200 meters, had to dig deep to hold off late surges from Further Ado (Gun Runner) and Canaletto. At the wire, the grandson of Declaration of War prevailed by 3/4 of a length and a head, stopping the clock in 1m43s23/100.
"We are a small stable, and it's very rewarding when you buy one or two horses at the sales and they turn into this," confessed Gustavo Delgado Jr. from the winner's circle. Castellano highlighted his mount's maturity: "In his previous race, he was just figuring out the two-turn game; today, when I called on him, he did exactly what is expected of a class thoroughbred."
With this triumph, The Puma collected 50 vital points, climbing to second place on the leaderboard with a total of 56 units. Runner-up Further Ado earned 25 points (reaching 35), while Canaletto had to settle for third and 15 points. The scoreboard was completed by Redland Rebels and Talkin (Good Magic), both securing points toward the first gem of the Triple Crown.
The day was a resounding success beyond the track as well. With an attendance of over 9,000 people, the total handle exceeded $15,000,000, confirming that this stop remains one of the most attractive and decisive landmarks on the road to the first Saturday in May.
