The Race to Remember: Spiny’s Farewell Embraced by Glory

On August 11, 1991, La Quebrada’s sensational sprinter bid farewell at Palermo with the 23rd victory of her career

It was August 11, 1991, with the Gran Premio Maipú (G1) as the stage—Palermo, of course. She, the great queen of speed in those days, bid farewell with yet another victory—her twenty-third—putting the perfect finishing touch on a career we may never witness again.

Spiny, the legendary mare, soared under Jacinto Herrera, leaving the outstanding Pancho Press, Rechiflo, and Ultramóvil trailing by several lengths. She carried the silks of Haras La Quebrada and was masterfully conditioned by Carlos Zarlengo.

A daughter of Ringaro out of Stridence (Salt Marsh), Spiny finished off the board just once in 41 starts—a testament to her remarkable consistency.

Inexplicably, she was never honored with a Premio Pellegrini, forever remembered as the champion without a crown.

Weighing over 500 kilos of sheer power, she dominated the sprinting division, captivated fans, and won it all. Spiny was a phenomenal mare. She passed away in 2008, after a modest broodmare career, with her best offspring being the G3 winner Scooby (Mutakddim).m)
