GOODWOOD, Sussex (Special for Turf Diario).— The Qatar Sussex Stakes (G1), one of the definitive centerpiece events of the iconic Glorious Goodwood Festival, is set to make a historic leap in prize money this season. The upcoming renewal scheduled for July 29 will feature a record-breaking purse of 1,500,000 pounds sterling, officially establishing the contest as the richest turf mile race in all of Europe.

This landmark financial upgrade comes as part of a strengthening long-term alliance between Goodwood Racecourse and Visit Qatar, a partnership initiated last season that provides a powerful commercial boost to the marquee fixtures on the British racing calendar.

The undisputed heavy favorite to capture the lion's share of this unprecedented prize is the brilliant Bow Echo, who remains unbeaten in four career appearances following spectacular, back-to-back classic triumphs in the 2000 Guineas (G1) at Newmarket and the St James's Palace Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot.

His trainer, George Boughey, enthusiastically welcomed the announcement: "It's fantastic news and a massive boost for British racing. This is exactly the kind of investment our industry needs. Raising the Sussex Stakes purse to 1.5 million pounds is a tremendous statement of intent by Goodwood and Visit Qatar. We all want to compete for the best possible prize money and see the finest horses in the world facing off in the sport's biggest races."

The classic-winning handler also confirmed that a trip to the Sussex downs has always been the primary objective for the remarkable son of Night of Thunder, who will arrive at the meeting with his perfect record intact.

"It is shaping up to be an extraordinary race. We look forward to renewing our rivalry with Gstaad (Starspangledbanner) and, crucially, testing our colt against the older generation for the very first time. We believe the unique contours of Goodwood will suit our horse perfectly, and we are incredibly excited for the challenge," Boughey added.

The aforementioned Gstaad looms as the main threat to Bow Echo's supremacy. The talented colt completed the exacta behind the favorite in both the English 2000 Guineas and the St James's Palace Stakes, though he brilliantly showcased his elite quality between those two efforts by capturing the Irish 2000 Guineas (G1) at the Curragh.

A formidable group of 32 initial entries also features several top-flight older specialists, including Opera Ballo(Ghaiyyath), More Thunder (Night of Thunder), Notable Speech (Dubawi), and Ten Bob Tony (Night of Thunder), guaranteeing a renewal of the highest international caliber.

Charles Gordon-Lennox, Duke of Richmond and Chairman of Goodwood, emphasized that the substantial purse increase "reflects a shared ambition to continually elevate the global profile of the Qatar Goodwood Festival presented by Visit Qatar and maintain its status among the elite fixtures of the worldwide turf calendar."

Boasting a prize fund that approaches nearly 2 million dollars, the Sussex Stakes adds significant intrigue to an edition that was already tracking to be one of the most competitive in recent memory, promising a thrilling clash of generations over Goodwood's demanding mile course.
