A longshot in the wagering, the daughter of Gouverneur Morris displayed overwhelming superiority over the five rivals who dared to challenge her

On an afternoon dominated by 2-year-olds, the Especial Juan Pedro Artigas (1600m, fast dirt) produced the surprising victory of Toribia Morris.
Dismissed in the wagering as an outsider—she returned $11.15—the daughter of Gouverneur Morris performed like a heavy favorite on the racetrack, disposing of her five rivals with complete authority.
Racing over her home track for trainer Omar Labanca, Toribia Morris displayed several highly interesting qualities, although it is impossible to overlook that her final time of 1:38.55 was 2.51 seconds slower than the mark recorded earlier by Hand In Hand (Il Campione) in the Especial Julio F. Penna.
That difference is enormous, though what the colt produced had been truly exceptional.
On a more earthly level, however, the filly representing Stud Doble S.S. still showed plenty of talent, traveling comfortably in third while favorite Far Away Avon (Gouverneur Morris) raced keenly on the lead under pressure from Libertaria (Uncle Chuck).
The front-runners weakened quickly once they straightened for home, and through the middle of the track Toribia Morris swept to the lead before immediately drawing away, eliminating any realistic hopes of a late rally.
From the back, Fuurin (Cima de Triomphe) closed best of all, though only enough to finish second, five lengths behind the winner, while Far Away Avon held third another three lengths away. The remainder finished much farther back.
Lautaro Balmaceda, the regular rider for Omar Labanca, deserves considerable credit for the victory.
He allowed the winner to settle into her own rhythm, resisted the temptation to move prematurely, and even managed to save something in reserve once the race was already decided.
Bred by Sergio Savi, Toribia Morris is the first foal out of La Negra Toribia (Roman Ruler) and descends from the outstanding Griffe de Paris (Telescópico) family, a pedigree strongly suggesting that distances from a mile upward should suit her perfectly.
It was a very promising first step for the bay filly, who, much like Hand In Hand earlier on the card, displayed qualities worth following closely.
As always with these maiden juvenile events, only time will determine whether this comfortable victory marked the beginning of a truly special campaign.
