Tyler Gaffalione shines over massive weekend with Dragoon Guard and Bishop's Bay

Both Brad Cox trainees captured the Lukas Classic Stakes (G2) and the Ack Ack Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs, where jockey Tyler Gaffalione enjoyed a stellar showcase with six total wins on the program

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (Special for Turf Diario).— One decisive victory and another that required a photo finish ultimately left the same mark on Saturday's stakes events at Churchill Downs: that of Brad Cox and Tyler Gaffalione. Dragoon Guard dominated with authority in the Lukas Classic Stakes (G2), while Bishop’s Bay showed tremendous heart to hang on in the Ack Ack Stakes (G3). For the jockey, they served as the crowning achievements of a spectacular six-win afternoon.

Gaffalione became just the 13th rider to reach six wins on a single program at the home of the Kentucky Derby (G1), and the first since Luis Saez accomplished the feat in November 2022. He even entered the final race with a chance to equal the track record of seven shared by Pat Day and Julien Leparoux, though Hereforagoodtime (Justify) was caught near the wire by Snipsnippitysnip (Girvin).

In the Lukas Classic, run over 1,800 meters on dirt with a $498,000 purse, Dragoon Guard took full advantage of a hot early pace to rediscover his top form. Chunk of Gold (Preservationist) and Banishing (Ghostzapper) locked horns upfront through fractions of 22s59 and 46s64, while the grey colt waited patiently in fourth, tracking outside clear of trouble.

Gaffalione moved him closer on the turn, and as the leaders posted 1,200 meters in 1m10s75, he was primed to strike. Banishing caved first, and Chunk of Gold could not hold him off either: Dragoon Guard pulled away in the stretch to prevail by 3 1/4 lengths in 1m48s35. This Is Uscar (Oscar Performance) finished another length back in third, ahead of favorite Tiztastic (Tiz the Law) and Banishing.

The son of Arrogate and Filimbi (Mizzen Mast), homebred for Juddmonte, secured his seventh victory in 17 career starts and increased his earnings to $1,297,171. It marked his third stakes win, following triumphs in the Indiana Derby (G3) and West Virginia Derby (G3) at age three.

Seventh in the Charles Town Classic (G2) in his previous start, he put that result behind him with a display that thrilled Cox. The trainer noted that his recent speed figures were far better than that finish suggested and that he had arrived in superb condition, though he preferred not to commit to next targets just yet.

Bishop’s Bay was forced to dig much deeper in the $399,000 Ack Ack. The son of Uncle Mo broke so sharply that Gaffalione accepted the lead, a position that had not originally been part of the blueprint. Macho Music (Maclean's Music) applied relentless pressure through splits of 22s92 and 45s51, but the KAS Stables representative shook him off exiting the turn.

After clicking past 1,200 meters in 1m09s82, he opened up a two-length cushion. That was when Coal Battle (Coal Front) launched a powerful outside rally, taking the battle down to the final stride. Bishop’s Bay dug in to preserve a head victory in 1m34s51, with Owen Almighty (Speightstown) finishing third, a length back.

Bred by WinStar Farm out of Catch My Drift (Pioneerof the Nile), the winner recorded his 11th victory in 18 starts—his seventh stakes title—and elevated his earnings to $2,875,080. Coming off a win in the Philip H. Iselin Stakes(G3), he once again demonstrated his class. One won by pure power; the other, by sheer grit. Cox and Gaffalionereaped the rewards of both.
