The Handicap Petite Ecurie, the centerpiece of Wednesday's racing card at Hipódromo de San Isidro, delivered a compelling tapestry of notable storylines over its 1,300-meter journey on the fast dirt.
Foremost was the authoritative performance by the highly talented Verenna, who recorded her first victory since February. She achieved this milestone in record-breaking fashion, stopping the clock in a blistering 1m15s56/100 to slice 3/100ths of a second off the previous track record held by Kelly Rose (Il Campione)—a feat made all the more remarkable considering she shouldered the demanding top weight of 59 1/2 kilos.
The victory also provided a highly emotional moment in the winner's circle, restoring jockey Iván Monasterolo to the headlines. The rider had only returned to competitive action a few days prior following a grueling three-month convalescence due to a race-riding accident.
Displaying immense tactical speed, Verenna assumed command immediately from the gates, setting a sharp but smooth tempo through early fractions of 23s84/100 and 47s13/100 while pursued by Che Solita (Zensational, 54) and Nakayama (Señor Candy, 54).
Upon turning into the home straight, the daughter of Cosmic Trigger found another gear, exploding away from the chasing pack to put the result beyond doubt long before reaching the wire. The betting favorite, Vieja Amiga Mask (Mask, 59), launched a late rally from the rear of the field, but it was only enough to secure the runner-up spot, finishing a distant six lengths adrift of the winner. Che Solita completed the trifecta another length back in third.
Trained by Eduardo Accosano for Stud El Chorrito, the bay mare has now compiled an admirable record of six victories from 15 lifetime starts, boosting her career bankroll to 39,857,000 pesos. This triumph marks her third black-type success, building upon previous stakes tallies in the Clásico Omnium (L) and the Clásico Vit Reina.
Bred by Haras Juan Antonio, Verenna is a daughter of the outstanding stallion Cosmic Trigger (Lizard Island) and represents the third foal out of Noche de Veda (Orpen). The dam is a maternal sister to Peruvian Grade 2 winner Nochero Bueno (Pure Prize) and a full sister to the exceptional producer Noche de Sueños. The latter's distinguished legacy includes graded stakes winners Nochero Querido (Most Improved) and Noche Alta (Hi Happy), Grade 1 placer Nooresh (Suggestive Boy), and the recent Grade 2-placed Nassau (Forge).
