Vieja Amiga Mask repeated her triumph in a tight finish between two big-hearted mares

The daughter of Mask racing for Stud Tinta Roja edged Save Your Tears by a half-head in the 1200-meter Handicap Servicio Veterinario del Hipódromo Palermo
That is how racing goes, and that is how horses are. Vieja Amiga Mask had found wins hard to come by, but less than two weeks ago at San Isidro she finally snapped her drought by taking the Handicap Fitzcarraldo. Quickly turned back around, the daughter of the proven stallion Mask returned to the track and kept her winning momentum going, capturing Monday's Handicap Servicio Veterinario del Hipódromo Palermo, one of two feature events on the card at Avenida del Libertador y Dorrego, contested over 1,200 meters on the fast main dirt track.
Carrying the 61-kilo top weight, the Stud Tinta Roja grey mare—racing in the colors of Jorge Brunasco—showcased high class and determination to prevail in a tight photo finish, with Save Your Tears (Full Mast, 58), another mare renowned for her raw heart, serving as her fierce adversary.
With William Pereyra aboard, Vieja Amiga Mask bided her time off the pace while Emely (Il Campione, 59) and Holly Valley (Homage, 53) battled up front through fractions of :24 flat for the quarter and :47.04 for the half-mile.
As the field turned into the lane, the pacesetters folded, allowing the top two to take command and duke it out eye-to-eye down the stretch. At the wire, the Haras La Valkiria homebred maintained a half-head margin, having fought back after briefly being headed in mid-stretch. A length back in third came Qué Buena B (Qué Vida Buena, 57), who closed late from the outermost post. The final time was 1:11.79.
Trained by Carlos Vigil, Vieja Amiga Mask returned $3.20 to win while securing her seventh victory from 18 career starts, three of which have come in stakes company—adding Monday's trophy to her previous handicap scores and the Clásico Aníbal D. Etchart.
Out of Majestic Life (Majestic Warrior), Vieja Amiga Mask is a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Amigazo Sky (Falling Sky), who famously came within a whisper of defeating El Kodigo (Equal Stripes) in the 2023 Gran Premio Polla de Potrillos (G1).
