Vieja Amiga Mask Returned to Victory in the Handicap Fitzcarraldo

After nearly 7 months, Vieja Amiga Mask achieved a well-deserved reunion with victory. It came this Wednesday over the fast normal dirt track at the San Isidro Racetrack, where she captured the Handicap Fitzcarraldo (1300 m), the feature event of a modest card.
Carrying the top weight of 59 kilos, the gray mare of Stud Tinta Roja snapped a streak of three consecutive runner-up finishes in stakes company by defeating Ana de Armas (Angiolo, 51 1/2) by 1 1/2 lengths, who had tried to pull off the wire-to-wire upset while capitalizing on her light assignment.
With William Pereyra in the irons, the winner raced off the pace while the frontrunner set sustained fractions of 23s18/100, 46s15/100, and 1m09s88/100. Upon entering the home stretch, the gray mare launched her attack wide and, after a brief duel, began to assert command.
With the race firmly in hand, Vieja Amiga Mask shifted inward in the final strides, prompting an objection from apprentice jockey Thiago Larrea Frutos aboard Ana de Armas. However, with sound judgment, the stewards determined there was no reason to alter the finish, despite the movement. Three-quarters of a length further back, Full Odalis (Full Mast, 55 1/2) rounded out the trifecta.
By the generous sire Mask—who scored a double on the afternoon—and bred at Haras La Valkiria, Vieja Amiga Maskis under the care of Arnaldo O. Vigil, though she was saddled by Carlos A. Vigil.
Her career record now boasts 6 victories in 17 starts and earnings surpassing 41 million pesos, with two of those triumphs coming above ordinary conditions, having previously prevailed in the Clásico Aníbal D. Etchart over the local turf mile back in January.
