He had a strong personality, and many still remember his temper tantrums. But Juan Alberto Maldotti was a formidable trainer, one of those who left a lasting mark on the sport. As has become tradition in recent years, the Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo will pay tribute to him with a handicap race in his name, serving as the highlight of a rather modest Monday card.

Scheduled over 1200 meters on the dirt track for fillies and mares aged five and up, the race has drawn a field of 12, with Viva Al Sur (South Kissing) looking to bounce back after a couple of unsuccessful attempts at the graded level.

Assigned the topweight of 59 kilos, the striking daughter of South Kissing, trained by Gustavo Scarpello, failed to fire in the G2 Fernández Guerrico and G3 Asociación de Propietarios de Caballos de Carrera, but it’s worth remembering she previously captured the Handicap Saint SimonHandicap Jerry Honor, and Handicap Rafale, as well as finishing a valuable fourth in the G2 Clásico Juárez Celman.

Usually positioned close to the pace, Viva Al Sur will face several dangerous rivals, including Candy Gloriosa (Vástago Salvaje, 56 kg), who recently turned heads at San Isidro’s training track with a convincing victory in the Handicap Petite Ecurie. Monday’s assignment, however, looks significantly tougher.

Also looking to rebound is Che Mamita (Safety Check, 57.5 kg), who owns strong credentials in the division and will be hoping for a fast early pace to launch her late run down the lane.

Bahía Cortines (Manipulator, 54.5 kg), Joy Antumalal (Il Campione, 54.5 kg), and Elina Regia (Il Campione, 53 kg) all exit the Handicap Carlos A. Zarlengo, where they finished second, third, and fourth, respectively, behind Aiyanna(Santillano), separated by just a half-length and a head. They will now benefit from a favorable weight swing against the top choices.

Among the longer shots, Dame Un Beso (Tantos Años, 51.5 kg) could be worth keeping an eye on. She’s been holding steady in allowance company and will be trying to return to the winner’s circle after a long drought.
