Sovereignty, Journalism Await as High-Class Showdown Elevates Oaklawn Handicap and Shakes Up Older Division in the U.S.

HOT SPRINGS, Arkansas (Special to Turf Diario).- The first of the three heavyweights to commit was White Abarrio, and from that moment on, his connections never wavered. The target was the Oaklawn Handicap (G2), and the plan never shifted an inch.
Nearly two months later, everything is set. This Saturday, over nine furlongs at demanding Oaklawn Park, the seasoned gray will face reigning champion Sovereignty (Into Mischief) for the first time, along with 2025 GI Preakness Stakes winner Journalism (Curlin), in a clash already shaping up as one of the most compelling matchups of the season.
“We’re not afraid of the competition,” said co-owner Mark Cornett, echoing a sentiment widely shared. “This is what racing needs. When was the last time we saw three horses like this meet? It’s been a while…”
Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. had mapped out this path early, confirming back in February that this race was the goal. Now, with a compact but ultra-deep field assembled, that decision looks all the more justified.
White Abarrio enters off a runner-up finish behind stablemate Skippylongstocking (Exaggerator) in the GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes, his lone start of 2026. But his résumé speaks volumes: winner of the GI Breeders’ Cup Classic, GI Whitney Stakes, and GI Florida Derby, he has long been a cornerstone of the older horse division.
Now seven, with earnings surpassing $7.7 million, the son of Race Day continues to show both durability and consistency at the highest level. “He’s a sound horse who still wants to run,” Cornett added. “We haven’t over-raced him. At this stage, we know him well and understand what he needs to perform.”
The roughly 18-hour trip to Arkansas posed no issues. “He shipped in perfectly,” his team reported.
With Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard and breaking from the rail, White Abarrio faces a small but formidable group. Sovereignty, trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, figures as the favorite, while Journalism, conditioned by Michael McCarthy, completes a high-powered trio.
For White Abarrio, this is nothing new—his career has been built on taking on the very best. But this time, the stage feels different. Because this isn’t just another race—it’s a showdown that could define the tone of the entire season.
