Rarely has this historic 1,800-meter fixture brought together such a concentration of quality, featuring eight runners—seven of them multi-millionaires—several champions, and a direct "Win and You're In" berth to the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) on the line.

It is no exaggeration to state that this could be one of the races of the year in the United States.

Much of the spotlight will shine on Magnitude, the formidable son of Not This Time who is currently enjoying the finest form of his career. Trained by Steven Asmussen, he arrives riding a four-race winning streak—a span that includes standout victories in both the Dubai World Cup (G1) and the Stephen Foster Stakes (G1), two performances that firmly established him among the world's elite horses. His trainer made no secret of his excitement: "He's having an extraordinary year. We are immensely proud of everything he's achieved, and we hope he can maintain this exceptional level."

While Magnitude enters as the horse of the moment, standing in his path is a rival who needs no introduction. Sovereignty (Into Mischief), the reigning Horse of the Year in the United States, will seek redemption after finishing third behind Magnitude in the Stephen Foster. The Godolphin color-bearer was a dominant force throughout 2025, stringing together victories in the Kentucky Derby (G1), the Belmont Stakes (G1), and the Travers Stakes (G1)—right here on this track—before a setback forced him to miss the Breeders' Cup Classic. Trainer Bill Mott is confident in bringing him back to his peak and noted, "He's always performed exceptionally well at Saratoga."

Mark Casse elected to take on the boys following her breathtaking display in the Ogden Phipps Stakes (G1), where she demolished her rivals by 12 3/4 lengths. A victory would place her alongside legendary names such as Black Maria (Black Toney), Gallorette (Challenger), Lady's Secret (Secretariat), and Personal Ensign(Private Account)—the only fillies or mares ever to capture the Whitney. "If she wins this race, she makes a very strong case for the Hall of Fame," the Canadian conditioner noted.

Baeza (McKinzie), third in the Kentucky Derby and winner of the Pennsylvania Derby (G1), will look to realize his full potential now under the care of Bill Mott, while Tiztastic (Tiz the Law), Forged Steel (Vekoma), and Antiquarian (Preservationist) round out a lineup with no filler. Forged Steel steps into his first G1 assignment following a resounding score in the Hollywood Gold Cup (G2).
