Khamal joined the list of representatives for the Jockey Club del Perú; Padre Roberto and Manyuz joined by paying US$ 25,000

LIMA, Peru (Special for Turf Diario).— The South American Organization for the Promotion of Thoroughbreds(OSAF) announced this Thursday the final list of participants for the 42nd edition of the Gran Premio Latinoamericano (G1-2,000 m), to be run on Sunday, April 26, on the turf at the Hipódromo de Monterrico, with a purse of US$ 300,000.
With the inclusion of Kanko (Newfoundland) as the fifth representative for the Jockey Club del Perú, and Padre Roberto (Hurricane Cat) and Manyuz (Run Away and Hide) as extra qualifiers, the race will feature a total of 15 contenders, 7 of whom will be locals.
Thus, Argentina will be represented by The Gladiator's Hat (Hat Ninja) and Thor Medina (Mootasadir); Brazil by Olympic Oman (Camelot Kitten) and Pivot Central (Salto); Chile by Medjool (Constitution), Apolo Rey(Mendelssohn), and Teao (Ya Primo); Peru by Puppi's Husband (Fortify), Khamal (Mendelssohn), Magic Power(Power World), María Luisa (Singe the Turf), and the aforementioned Kanko, Padre Roberto, and Manyuz; and the sole Uruguayan card will be Galikovic (Goldikovic).
This will be the seventh occasion that the Coloso de Surco hosts the continental race (1987, 1993, 1999, 2008, 2014, 2024, and 2026), equaling the Hipódromo de San Isidro for the track that has hosted it the most times.
However, it will be the first time it is decided on the Monterrico turf course rather than the dirt, as was customary. The change is bearing fruit for the organizers and for continental racing in general, as all participating countries will bring competitive horses, a situation that had not occurred in the most recent editions.
As had been discussed during the week, Obataye (Courtier), the winner of the 2025 Latinoamericano at Gávea, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was not included in the final list, despite having been invited by the organization. However, to make his participation effective, his owner had to shell out 25,000 dollars (as if he were another extra qualifier), an option that was not accepted.
Beyond the absence of Obataye, the Latino will indeed have a previous winner in its lineup. This is Manyuz, born in the United States, who prevailed in 2024 carrying the same colors of Stud Jet Set that he will wear now.
His confirmation as an extra qualifier drew attention, since the stable already has the Argentines Padre Roberto and Puppi's Husband, although it is expected he will act as a pacemaker for his stablemates. In that regard, Carlos Trujillo, the official jockey for Jet Set, will ride Padre Roberto.
Within the list of confirmed entries, the highest-rated horses are The Gladiator's Hat, Teao, Puppi's Husband, and Khamal, all with 115 points, while Medjool and Padre Roberto carry 114.
Additionally, 4 of the qualifiers are 3-year-olds, 6 are 4-year-olds, 4 are 5-year-olds, and one, Manyuz, is now 7.
The 2026 Gran Premio Latinoamericano now knows its aspirants and, with one month to go before the big race, it will be time to fine-tune details and confirm some jockeys who have not yet been selected.
Furthermore, OSAF already has dates set for each of the shipments, and one can only hope there are no setbacks in training. If everything goes according to plan, a highly competitive edition of a unique G1 classic will be contested.
