Zaatar aims to reassert his dominance in the Handicap Mangangá

The Stud Las Monjitas runner enters off a victory in the Handicap Potrillazo and will carry top weight of 58 kilos. Colour Vision, Hit Rouge, and the rising Exultant figure to be his primary opponents

Racegoers will have to wait until late Monday afternoon to enjoy the Handicap Mangangá, the centerpiece feature of Monday’s program at Hipódromo Palermo. Slated as the eleventh race on a 12-race card with a scheduled post time of 7:00 p.m., the contest brings together older horses aged 5 and up over 1,400 meters on the main dirt track, forming a competitive field poised for an intense battle.

The opportunity arrives at an ideal time for Zaatar to build upon the form he displayed a little over a month ago when he captured the Handicap Potrillazo over this exact track and trip. That afternoon, the Stud Las Monjitasrepresentative dug deep to prevail by a head and a neck over Lochness (Le Ken) and Amiguito Don José (Todo Un Amiguito, 56 1/2 kg), respectively, in a blanket finish that demanded both class and courage.

Now, with jockey Cristian Velázquez back in the irons, he will shoulder 58 kilos, the third-highest assignment in the field. While his recent victory positions him as the horse to beat, the scenario is far from simple: he faces proven handicappers alongside up-and-coming rivals eager to challenge him from the break.

Chief among the established threats is Colour Visión (Univisión), tasked with giving weight to the field under top weight of 59 1/2 kilos. His recent victory over a mile in the Especial Libreo at La Plata saw him return to sharp form, holding off multiple winner Escape Room (Il Campione) by the narrowest of margins. That success restores confidence as he tackles a tough field, even with a slight cutback of 200 meters.

Hit Rouge (Hit It a Bomb) cannot be dismissed either, despite a puzzling effort last time out. Carrying 58 1/2 kilos, he will seek to rebound from a disappointing last-place finish behind Fantasy Rim (Remote) in a handicap where he started as the odds-on favorite—a performance too poor to represent his true ability.

Prior to that, he had finished a solid second, 2 lengths behind El Mejor Recuerdo (Il Campione), in the Clásico Día de la Bandera, which followed a victory in the Handicap Aniversario Inauguración del Hipódromo Argentino off a lengthy layoff. Those credentials make him a serious contender if he regains his prime form.

On current momentum, Exultant (Vagabundo Inc, 55 1/2 kg) warrants serious consideration. Riding a three-race winning streak in allowance company, he scored a 3/4-length victory over this course and distance in his most recent start.

This stepping up to handicap company forces him to prove how much of that progression translates to a tougher environment, but he arrives bolstered by back-to-back wins and plenty of upside.

Amiguito Don José will aim to build on his third-place effort in the Potrillazo after subsequently finishing fifth in the Clásico Pablo Gustavo Falero, won by the aforementioned El Mejor Recuerdo.

The field is completed by Bolleros Spring (Greenspring, 53 1/2 kg), who captured the Handicap Good Time in March by 3 lengths over El Gazpacho (Bodemeister), and the seasoned veteran Approval Cat (Endorsement, 54 kg).

Zaatar finds a prime opening to solidify his current form. However, between his weight assignment, the class of several established rivals, and the upward trajectory of Exultant, the Handicap Mangangá promises to demand another top-level performance if he is to enter the winner's circle once more.
