The Maker’s Mark Mile Stakes (G1) winner will be one of the star attractions on a card featuring five stakes races and $3,750,000 in purse money. The Coolmore Turf Mile Stakes (G1), the First Lady Stakes (G1), and the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity (G1) will be joined by the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes (G2) and the Woodford Stakes(G2)

The opening day at Keeneland delivered big emotions, and Saturday promises to raise the stakes even higher. The 25th anniversary celebration of the Fall Stars Weekend features a formidable card boasting five stakes races—three of them Group 1s—and several marquee stars putting the finishing touches on their preparations for the Breeders’ Cup.

All eyes will be centered on the Coolmore Turf Mile Stakes (G1-1,600 m, turf, $1,500,000), which drew a field of nine and sees Zulu Kingdom (Ten Sovereigns) return to the course where he captured one of the most significant victories of his career during the spring.

Owned by Madaket Stables, Michael Dubb, William Strauss, and Michael Caruso, the Irish-bred colt scored here in the Maker’s Mark Mile Stakes (G1) and will now look to assert his dominance once more over the Keeneland mile in the 41st renewal of one of the meet’s signature events.

The Coolmore Turf Mile will serve as the richest race on an 11-race program, anchoring a card that offers $3,750,000 in purse money across its five stakes features alone.

Also on the turf, but restricted to fillies and mares, the First Lady Stakes (G1-1,600 m, $800,000) attracted a deep field of 11 entrants.

Headlining the lineup is Classic Q (Classic Empire), carrying the colors of Gary Barber, Crevalle Racing, and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, who arrives backed by back-to-back graded wins in the Just a Game Stakes (G1) and the Distaff Turf Mile Stakes (G2).

It will be the 29th running of the First Lady, another traditional centerpiece of this meeting and a vital stepping stone for the top female milers in the country.

2-Year-Olds Take Center Stage

Another major focal point will be set on the rising generation in the 113th edition of the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity(G1-1,700 m, $650,000).

Only six juveniles were entered, but the small field packs immense interest.

Coach Pope (Tapit), owned by Gainesway Stable, Shamrock Stables, and Michael J. Mackin, stands out among the primary contenders, joined by a pair of colts who made eye-catching winning debuts during the Saratoga meeting.

One is American History (Constitution), representing WinStar Farm, First Go Racing, and CHC Inc., while the other is Q B Rocket (Gun Runner), campaigning for Spendthrift Farm and Frank Fletcher Racing Operations.

With the Breeders’ Cup looming closer, the Breeders’ Futurity will offer a far sterner test for juveniles beginning to stake their claim among the leaders of their crop.

A Double Dose of Speed

Sprinters will also have two high-profile opportunities throughout the afternoon.

The Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes (G2-1,200 m, $400,000) drew seven runners and features Praying(Vekoma), who returns seeking to defend the title she secured twelve months ago.

The Newtown Anner Stud homebred will face formidable opposition from Echo Sound (Echo Town), owned by Gabriel Duignan and already a multiple graded stakes winner.

The afternoon’s other sprint feature takes to the turf course in the Woodford Stakes (G2-1,100 m, $400,000), which assembled a field of 10 and features seasoned veteran Nobals (Noble Mission), one of the most recognizable turf sprinters on the American circuit.

Representing Patricia’s Hope, he has amassed $1,951,452 in career earnings, highlighted by his crowning achievement in the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1).

At this stage of his career, Nobals remains firmly entrenched among the division’s elite and returns to Keeneland eager to prove he still retains plenty of his signature early speed.

The Fall Stars Weekend is only getting started, and Keeneland is already serving as the premier launching pad for the Breeders’ Cup at the end of the month. Following a thrilling Friday, Saturday offers even higher quality: five stakes races, three Group 1s, and a standout like Zulu Kingdom seeking to reign supreme once again over a course where he has already proven himself at the highest level.
