The daughter of Qué Vida Buena surprised Sia with a powerful late rally down the stretch

LA PLATA.- It looked as though Sia (Puerto Escondido, 54kg) already had the Especial Bethysmal (1600m, dirt)safely in her grasp, the other feature event above allowance level on Saturday’s card at this racetrack. But then After Hours (54) came flying down the center of the track to snatch away the top prize in the final strides.

The daughter of Qué Vida Buena turned for home second-to-last and still far behind, only appearing on screen just as Sia seized command and began fueling the hopes of the many bettors who had made her the favorite. Front-running Expert Advice (Il Campione, 56) had already done her job setting the pace.

By the 200-meter mark, however, momentum had clearly shifted behind the Stud Travelwell runner, who swept past inside the final furlong to defeat Sia by half a length, while Puerta Plateada (Puerto Escondido, 52) finished third another two lengths back after a final time of 1:39.75.

After Hours entered the race off a distant finish in the Especial Haras Vacación, though prior to that she had won three of her previous four starts. Curiously, over her last eight appearances she had been saddled by four different trainers, including Angel Piana, her actual conditioner.

For Piana, it turned into a perfect afternoon.

A short while earlier, he had already celebrated the victory of Foto Mental (Leofric) in the Clásico Joaquín V. Maqueda (G3), with both winners featuring Jonathan Fredes listed as the official trainer in the program.
