LIMA, Perú (Special for Turf Diario).- The Argentine flag flew high once again last weekend at Hipódromo de Monterrico in Peru, as two homebred stars claimed the top classics, reaffirming the quality and distinction that define them.
The first to deliver on public expectations was Il Omare, a 4-year-old bay carrying the blood of Il Campione and the famed influence of Southern Halo through his dam, Queen Halo. Born at Haras Santa Inés and representing Stud Jet Set, the Juan Suárez trainee captured the Clásico República de Chile, contested Saturday, September 20, over 2,000 meters on turf, asserting his superiority in characteristic style.
Rider Carlos Trujillo kept him well-positioned just behind the leader Trudeau (Buenos Dias), launching him in the stretch to take command decisively in the final meters. He crossed the wire a length ahead, marking his fifth victory in 15 starts and boosting his earnings to S/72,171. Jimmy Buttler (Unbridled Command) and Marc Spacial (Marconi) completed the placings in a race run in fractions of 24.2 and 49.26 seconds, finishing in 2:02.61—a solid time for the distance.
Il Omare now heads into the Gran Premio Latinoamericano (G1) in peak form, set for October 18 at Hipódromo da Gávea in Rio de Janeiro, where he will be one of the Peruvian representatives.
Just 24 hours later, Argentine prominence returned, this time thanks to Sexy Star, a daughter of Equal Stripes out of Paula Sexy (Ride The Rails), bred at Haras Abolengo and also racing in the familiar Stud Jet Set colors. She justified her favoritism in the Clásico Estados Unidos Mexicanos, held Sunday, September 21, over 1,000 meters on turf.
Under the precise guidance of Húber Bocanegra, the Juan Suárez-trained filly displayed her well-known speed to take control in the decisive stages and pull clear to the wire. It was her eighth win from 32 starts, extending a consistent campaign with total earnings now reaching S/81,451. Motley Crue (Muwaary) finished 1½ lengths back, with Oreo(Muwaary) and Tiche (Bay of Plenty) trailing, in a genuinely fast contest: fractions of 22.3 and 43.21 seconds, finishing in 55.63 seconds.
The victories of Il Omare and Sexy Star share a common denominator: the skill of Juan Suárez, multiple-time leading trainer at Monterrico, who once again showcased his expertise by presenting his charges in impeccable condition to deliver when it mattered most.
