The South Kissing filly from Haras Masama made a bold statement on turf to join the ranks of the top sprinters

They say there’s strength in unity, and perhaps that old adage can serve as a guide to how La Gran Furtiva’s triumph in the Clásico Condesa (G3-1000m, yielding turf) came together—the race that opened Friday’s four-race stakes sequence at Hipódromo de San Isidro.
La Pampa is one of Argentina’s key turf provinces, with multiple racetracks in operation, plenty of horses in training, and a large, strong group of breeders actively investing and dreaming big.
It was a collaboration between two of the region’s most recognized breeding operations that produced the chestnut filly who has now emerged as one of the leading sprinters among her generation. In 2020, Silvia Schonholz and Marcos Alfonso, owners of Haras Masama, sent their broodmare La Gran Fugitiva (Grand Reward) to the generous South Kissing (Southern Halo) at Haras El Caldén, run by Gustavo and Lito Scarpello. The result of that pairing is today’s top sprinter.
One could go further and note that it was also very much a La Quebrada choice—referring to the Ceriani Cernadas’ operation that played a key role in Masama’s development, both through stallion agreements and by maintaining a high number of mares carrying white and red genetics on Marcos Riglos’s farm.
The story is that, five years after that decision, La Gran Furtiva took a decisive step forward in her carefully managed, upwardly trending career, winning handily from one end to the other in what marked her debut on turf, having previously raced exclusively on Palermo’s dirt course—carrying Masama’s silks.
Under Francisco Leandro, the Lucas D. Tello trainee traveled smoothly and drew away to defeat Enjoy Dancing (Hi Happy) by three lengths, with Nisa (Angiolo) completing the trifecta while the more fancied runners failed to factor.
La Gran Furtiva now boasts a record of 4-for-5 and stopped the clock in 58.51 seconds in the Condesa, a race that will surely mark a turning point in her career.
