Coal Battle Breezes Sharply at Keeneland as He Targets Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile to Challenge Full Serrano

The winner of the Rebel Stakes (G2) clocked 1 minute flat for the 1000 meters and satisfied his trainer, Lonnie Briley. Meanwhile, Mark Casse confirmed that Voyager will run in the Juvenile Fillies on the dirt and that Canada will target a different race

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (Special for Turf Diario).— Coal Battle was among the headliners during Thursday's training sessions at Keeneland, covering 1000 meters in 1 minute flat—the fastest mark among four horses working at the distance. The son of Coal Front is pointing toward the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1), scheduled for October 31, though he still needs to secure a spot in the final field.
Conditioned by Lonnie Briley for Robbie Norman of Norman Stables, Coal Battle worked after the second track maintenance period and moved significantly faster than his trainer anticipated.
"He did it quite easily. I was expecting 1:01 or 1:02, so 1:00 flat was a little quick. But he looked very good, with no apparent effort," Briley explained while walking the horse back to the barn.
The conditioner noted that his schedule will remain unchanged: walking on Friday, a light trot on Saturday, and then resuming his regular routine.
Coal Battle enters off a game runner-up finish, beaten just a head by Bishops Bay (Uncle Mo) in the Ack Ack Stakes(G3) on September 26 at Churchill Downs. Since arriving at Keeneland from Ellis Park, he had previously clocked 1:04.80 for 1000 meters on October 14.
A winner of 5 races from 16 starts with $1,442,150 in earnings, the bay enjoyed a stellar 3-year-old campaign featuring victories in the Smarty Jones Stakes (L) and the Rebel Stakes (G2), both at Oaklawn Park, before finishing eleventh in the Kentucky Derby (G1).
He is currently among the 16 pre-entered contenders for the $1 million Dirt Mile and sits second on the list of non-selected also-eligibles by the Breeders' Cup panel.
However, his chances of drawing in look favorable, as several runners ranked ahead of him—such as Built (Hard Spun), Hymn (McKinzie), Napoleon Solo (Liam's Map), and T Kraft (Connect)—hold other races on the program as their primary preference.
Casse Determines Path for Voyager
Another notable development came from Mark Casse's barn, with the trainer confirming that Voyager will contest the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) on the dirt rather than the Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1), for which she was also pre-entered.
The daughter of Justify, campaigned by D.J. Stable, most recently captured the Natalma Stakes (G1) over the Woodbine turf in Canada, but her trainer is confident she can translate that form back to the dirt.
"She’s a very good filly and worked on the dirt as well as a horse can. Her first two races on that surface were also good," Casse maintained.
Purchased for $300,000 at the 2025 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale, Voyager debuted with a runner-up finish over 1100 meters at Churchill Downs before again finishing second to Harper's Corner (Speaker's Corner) in the Schuylerville Stakes (L) at Saratoga.
She subsequently switched to the turf, breaking her maiden over 1700 meters at Saratoga prior to her Natalmatriumph.
New Target for Canada
Casse also sent out Canada, a Medaglia d'Oro colt who covered 800 meters in 48s40, recording the fastest time among 19 workers at the distance.
He worked in company with Now Now Romeo, an unraced son of Mandaloun.
Canada comes off a victory in the Cup & Saucer Stakes at Woodbine on October 4 in just his second start, but sits 22nd on the preference list for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1).
"It looks like he won't make it into the Breeders' Cup, so he'll run in the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance," Casseexplained. That listed stakes race, restricted to 2-year-olds over 1600 meters on the turf, will be run on Friday, October 30, as the second race on the card with a 12:30 PM local post time.
Thus, while Coal Battle works to confirm his spot in the Dirt Mile, Casse's team has already mapped out the next steps for a pair of stable representatives, with Voyager taking on the challenge of returning to the dirt at the highest level.
